Whiskey Barrel Coffee Table

“This whiskey barrel coffee table is one of my newest and most favorite creation!”

Whiskey Barrel Coffee TableHaving recently finished up a large order of Whiskey Barrel Chairs for Stone Brewing Company, I had more than plenty of Whiskey Barrel tops & bottoms. Not wanting to throw them away even thought most of them were warped and made from small individual pieces, I got to thinking. Literately I had over 100 tops, multiple piles over 6-7 feet tall of great American White Oak. With not a whole bunch of options I realized I needed to offer a second kind of whiskey barrel coffee table.

I really like the concept of using a barrel half like the other Wine & Whiskey Coffee Table but I wanted to utilize the empty space inside. First I thought about just flipping the barrel right side up from the other design, but right away I realized it will be way too similar. I want to offer multiple options to my customers therefore I went with the horizontal cut. This way the table will provide a larger surface area and more space inside. Plus now you can choose from a round or a square table.

The most important fact about this table is that it’s 100% made from used Whiskey Barrels. The top is made from several barrel heads. Over 50 pieces are joined together to create a nice big table surface. It has a black patina because the inside of the Whiskey Barrels get charred to give the whiskey its great taste and color. The underside has a very neat look because some of the old marking and dates are still visible. The barrel body was taken apart completely then cleaned and assembled back together.

Today was nice and relaxing day for the Hungarian Workshop. The best part was that it ended at out favorite place, Stone Brewery Liberty Station! No matter how hard the day was, as long as it leads to relaxing in a Whiskey Barrel Chair and enjoying a high quality beer; it is OK with us!

The day started out with an open house at Makers Place San Diego CA. It is a workshop where I do all my work and has helped me fast forward this business. Its has been just over a year since I joined the felicity. The entire shop has pretty much kick started the Hungarian Workshop and has turned it to where it is today. During the open house I had a chance to meet and talk to potential customers which is always exciting. Communicating and connecting with people  is very fun especially when they are thrilled about our products. A great benefit was I had a chance to network and meet some people who work at different wineries. Finding a another good source for material is definitely a plus when it comes to this business. Locating barrels can be a pain in the butt when you cant find them, so whenever we have a chance to meet a new supplier we don’t let it slip through.

After the open house at Makers Place it was time to head over to the local hang out: Stone Brewery Liberty Station. Even on a Sunday afternoon the place is was full and busy. Having a place so close by that carries my line of  Whiskey Barrel furniture is amazing!!! Anytime I want come by and see happy faces in my chairs, this is the place to be.

Hi and Welcome to the Hungarian Workshop! My name is Balazs Moldovan and I am pleased to welcome you to our website. Let me take you on a quick tour and show you our versions of Wooden Adirondack Chairs made out of Wine & Whiskey Barrels. So far we have turned well over 170 French & American White Oak barrels into comfortable and elegant furniture. I have done work with several restaurants, hotels and private buyers. One of our main customer is Stone Brewing Company in our home town of sunny San Diego.

The first stop in this blog will be out Whiskey Barrel Furniture. If you are a fan of Whiskey or Bourbon these are the ideal wooden Adirondack chairs for you. We took old barrels from Kentucky and with a little bit of sanding and T.L.C. you’d surprised what great material was hidden underneath. The distilleries char the inside of the barrel which create that great flavor and color in the whiskey. With some light sanding and an oil finish, really makes the oak’s natural patina pop out show of their previous life’s story. All pieces are handmade and created for comfort as well as elegance.

Since wine is enjoyed by many people and because we live so close to wine country it’s no wonder why these are in our top selling items. The kind of colors that are left behind on the French Oak staves are pretty much irreplicable. The wine usually will leave a red, burgundy and dark purple natural stains behind. Wine Barrels have a bigger curve in the center which contours to your back and supports your body through out. After seeing and sitting in one of our chairs you will never look at a barrel the same way again.

Our reclaimed wood furniture made out of Wine & Whiskey barrels have been the Hungarian Workshop’s number one selling items. I started using French & American Oak barrel about a year ago and I have not had a chance to work with anything else. The process can be a little time consuming while working with used barrels. Just prepping and sanding one barrel can be a few hours. It may seem very simple to make chairs, tables, love seats etc., but one thing everyone over looks is that not one barrel is exactly alike. Definitely took some practicing getting used to.

Living by the beach for the past 2 years has been amazing. Here in sunny San Diego we are blessed with great weather all year around. One of the perks of living in a smaller community is that you get to walk around more often. Plus parking can be a pain in the butt so why bother. A few weeks ago couple of buddies of mine bought skateboards to get around town a little faster. Right of way I was intrigued, after all I enjoy surfing why not try it on land. Not wanting just to buy one, I turned to my creative side.

Since I have been reclaiming, re-purposing & up-cycling material for furniture for over a year now, I thought this could be a whole new chapter.

Having some extra material left over from making our Whiskey Barrel Chairs, I had a wild idea to use some to make this very fun Whiskey Barrel Skateboard. The Whiskey Barrel Staves create a unique curve from front to back and from side to side as well. Allowing you to maneuver around with easy. The board it self is very heavy duty, after all it is made from American White Oak. The material has been getting stronger and harder from it’s previous life of holding Whiskey for many many years. The top side of the board is pure black because of the charring the distilleries have to do to give the Whiskey its great taste and colors. The Whiskey Barrel Skateboard’s length is about 34 inches and 8-9 inches wide. The front end is cut to slight curve and bull nosed for a smooth finish. The back end is left as is to show of the barrel’s chime & croze to ensure easy distinction of what the board used to be.

The time is finally here. The time when we’ll have an amazing brewery close enough to our homes where we we can even walk to. Stone Brewing Company Liberty Station will be opening their doors on May 15th. Now I won’t have to driving 40 minutes to enjoy a delicious Stone Smoked Porter, while relaxing in a Whiskey Barrel Chair that the beer actually came from – that I made! 🙂

It has been just over a year since I started working with this great brewery. With three of their locations under my belt so far (Stone Brewing Co. Escondido, Oceanside and Stone Farm) and next week Liberty Station, I feel very privileged to work such incredible company. I dropped off 10 Whiskey Barrel Chairs yesterday and I already have an order of 10 more.

Stone Brewing Company at Liberty Station is going to be huge. While I was dropping of the chairs I had the chance to walk around and explore little. The main restaurant design looks wonderful. Even with a high ceiling and giant stones around, the room feels warm and cozy. The bar has these great glass top tables that have a little stream running through underneath. Very unique. There is also Bocce Ball courtyard which will be very fun for everyone who likes to have a drink and play games with their friends. Speaking of fun, wait until see the bathrooms. I guarantee you’ll do a double take right when you enter!  The weird thing was, the entire place wasn’t even complete yet. There were still fork lifts and men setting in these gigantic boulders in the main outdoor section. Can’t wait to fill up that part with chairs and tables. I also heard something about a movie theater! I would love to talk more about Stone Brewing Company Liberty Station however I don’t want to spoil any other surprises.

The bottom line is, this place will be far more than just your average brewery and restaurant. With all these amenities you and your friends will be entertained for hours and you wont want to leave. I encourage you to go check it out and drink a beer in our chairs.

Stone Brewery Farm

Whiskey Barrel Chair by The Hungarian Workshop at Stone Brewing Co. FARMToday we had an amazing day! Me and my fiance had a chance to get a sneak peek at the new Stone Brewery Farm. The size of the place is enormous and the scenery was beautiful. Being away from the city was definitely a fun change and felt very relaxing.  The whole atmosphere reminded of a simpler time. Kind of like my childhood while I was growing up in Felsőzsolca, Hungary.

Stone Brewery FarmAfter finishing the 10 Whiskey Barrel Chairs that Stone had ordered for the farm, I was pretty excited to make the delivery myself. I heard a lot of great things about Stone Farms beforehand, so when the opportunity come to visit the place I was thrilled. Stone Brewing Company is expending more and more everyday and I am very thankful to be working with them! They are one of my biggest clients who has fast forwarded my business in the right direction.

He is a very nice guy who showed us around and introduced us to some of the other Stone Farmers. Seeing the amount of work that goes into running a whole entire farm has made me really appreciate the hard working man and women who make their living that way.

Chickens at Stone FarmThe Stone Brewery Farm will feature quit a few neat attractions as well. On our adventure walking around the farm we discovered their chickens, ducks and quails. One of Stone most popular dish is Quail “Knots” which is a delicious pickled quail egg. Once we visited all the animals we headed down to an open area that seems like perfect place to set the Whiskey Chairs and have few drinks. In the clearance was also a concrete pizza oven. I can’t wait for that to be up and running! A fresh slice and a cold beer away from the city and all the noise, count me in. Speaking of beer, I got the word that the Stone Brewery Farm will be featuring a new Lavender beer. Look for that in the near future. By the entrance of the farm there will be a bar area that has a deck with a great view of the entire place.

When Did Whiskey Barrel Furniture Become Elegant?

Could be future Whiskey Barrel Furniture for the Hungarian WorkshopWhiskey Barrel Furniture are a great way to stay “Green”. Recycling and Up-cycling old items and used material has become very popular in the recent years. It’s not just popular, it has even become very important and a must for a few people. Which is great because sometimes we forget and not realize how many things we waste and discard. Simply all it takes is a little bit of creativity, and an everyday items can have a whole new second  life.

Most often when you see an old barrel it will be a trash can or it’s been cut in half and turned into a planter. Those are good and easy ways to re-use them but not great. The fact is that Wine and Whiskey barrels are made from white oak. A type of wood that is perfect to use for most wood working projects and can be pretty pricey when purchased brand new. If you ever had the chance to visited a winery or a distillery you probably have seen the hundredths of barrel they go through each year stacked in a huge pile. It’s a sight like that that will make you say “There must be another use for them.”, even if you’re not a woodworker or environmentalist.

It has now been over a year since I started working with used barrels and I am happy to report that it seems people have really took a liking to my Wine & Whiskey Barrel Furniture. The key element in turning an old barrel into furniture is detail. Just because it’s rustic furniture it does not mean there should be nails sticking out, have rough edges, etc. The way to make up-cycled material look elegant in my eyes is to go above and beyond, to the point where you may not even be able to tell what the item was previously. Each time I have to explain where the wood came from to somebody, I feel a great amount of satisfaction and confidence in my work.

San Diego Home And Garden Show

Wine & Whiskey Barrel Chairs at the Home & Garden ShowLast weekend we had a great opportunity to show off our barrel chairs at the 28th Annual Home  & Garden Show in Del Mar. It was the first time the Hungarian Workshop was featured in such a large event and the results were amazing. Just 3 days of exposure has done wonders for the business. With retailers calling and custom orders on the way, this was definitely an opportunity of a life time.

Hungarian Workshop at the Spring Home And Garden ShowIt all started last week when I received an email from Navid Mostatabi from Envision Landscape Studios.  They showed me an amazing display plan drawn up which had a fantastic modern yet natural look, and I knew I had to be a part of it. The plans originally called for some standard Adirondack Chairs but they said they wanted something different. Something that would standout from the ordinary and really capture people eyes. So that is where the Hungarian Workshop came in and made it happen.

After all it’s NOT everyday you get to show off your handmade furniture for thousands of people to see. In storage I already had enough staves prepped for two Whiskey Barrel Chairs, which was a life saver. Even though I did not have a wine barrel laying around I still wanted to show off our wine barrel furniture as well. I made a few phone calls and a couple of minutes later I was on my way to pick up the perfect barrel. I am never a big fan when it comes to rushing especially when it involves furniture making, but sometimes you may have no choice. Eventually orders like that will come along and knowing how to handle them is a big plus. Since situations like this are definitely not new to us, we were able to pull it off without any problems what so ever.
