Recycled Barrel Furniture San Diego

We make the finest quality barrel furniture here in Sunny San Diego. We source our material from the local vineyards, brewers and distillers. Our online shop offers a wide variety of handcrafted furniture as well as home decor. We have been in business since 2012 and we are about to make our 1000th barrels chair. Since the beginning I have been numbering our chairs to have the knowledge of just how many we have made. I have been making Adirondack style chairs in past and I never kept tabs on how many I have produced. Once I made my first barrel chair I know I wanted to change that.

I made my first whiskey barrel chair in June of 2012. Just by luck I had a photographer from the San Diego Union Tribune do a piece on the shared workshop I was working out from at the time. We captured pictures of the first ever Hungarian Workshop barrel chair getting made. I still have that chair right out side my patio now. Rain or shine it still holding up strong. Maybe a bit weathered but that’s what adds character.

The Hungarian Workshop has been San Diego’s number one place to order fine quality Wine barrel furniture. In past four years we have teamed up with Stone Brewing Company and haven’t slowed down since. Another big client of ours has been couple of the local Whole Foods Markets and few smaller local brewery’s tasting rooms.

In past year I have been doing a lot of product and development and we have entered a whole new demographic of strictly interior design. The concept of adding fine leather to our current pieces become evident after our products were needed in more and more interior location. By end of the summer we will have the whole new leather line available online and most likely in a couple retail store.

The Chair –

We handcraft each chair from a single wine barrel that is the perfect shape and size for a rocker. Many people often think you can use just about any barrel, but in fact it is important to use a short and round one. Likely a Cabernet barrel will fit that description. They have a much bigger curve radius and wider staves that work very well. All major joints have support brackets underneath for additional reinforcement which we make our self from the Wine Barrel’s rings. All the other hardware is stainless steel for great quality and a high end look. For the finish we use Brazilian Rosewood which protects the oak while bringing out the beautiful grain pattern and patina.

The backrest and seat feature the fine Italian leather upholstered by hand in a tufted style.

Italian Full-Grain Leather 

FULL-GRAIN has been a favorite for a long time that has a very natural look and feel with a generous color palette. Unlike top-grain leather, the surface is left naked. It is aniline-drum dyed and softer to the touch. For anyone who is a true leather purists and those who appreciate the beautiful patina that is enhanced with age.

The Hungarian Workshop has been making furniture from Wine & Whiskey barrels for the last two and half years and picked up a few big clientele along the way. The Story


The Hungarian Workshop first started out as a furniture company making patio set out in Las Vegas. A short year later we made to the move to south California where we felt opportunities would open up more doors to bigger and better things. (Boy we were right!) With in the first six months we had Stone Brewing Co. contacting us and it was with them where the whole better furniture got started. Right after I finished my first barrel chair and took it back for the managers to see and orders started. With in that first sunny San Diego year is when we officially phased out Redwood and Cedar furniture and focused mainly on our new Upcycled Barrel Furniture Line.
