Whiskey Barrel Furniture Ideas

“One of Southern California’s best barrel furniture manufacturer and designer, the Hungarian Workshop has plenty of whiskey barrel furniture ideas to show you.”

Whiskey Barrel Furniture in San DiegoLet me guess, you just got your hands on a premium whiskey barrel  and now your are thinking about making something out of it. Excellent! The art of up cycling should be embraced by others. It’s is perfect way of doing something positive for the environment and an easy way to obtain a great hobby. Whether you are a beginner or an expert woodworker, using reclaimed material will arise new challenges.

In this blog I will show you a few of my whiskey barrel furniture ideas which you can use as a start in your own project’s plan. I won’t cover all designs but I encourage you too check out my site anyway and share it with anyone who enjoys Wine & Whiskey Barrel creations.

The Adirondack Chair

This is by far the most common project because we are all familiar with the style. This chair requires to use 90% of a full barrel and has minimal amount precision cuts. This an ideal plan for you if you have made an Adirondack chair before and I guarantee you won’t have any troubles.

Whiskey Barrel Coffee Table

Whiskey Barrel Table IdeasNow I am sure you have seen this concept as well. By cutting the barrel in half you create a perfect storage space which most homes could always use a little more of. There are very simple ways to make this design but I highly recommend using as much barrel wood as you can. Occasionally you will see craftsman mixing other type of wood with barrel and I feel that kind of takes away from the art. However when it comes to making a table top I do myself ideally use well seasoned white oak. It’s the same type of wood as the barrel and I won’t have to worry about seems opening up from undried material.

Cutting Boards and Platters

Whiskey Barrel Platter If you work with barrels regularly, you will most likely have some extra lids and staves left over. Small projects can be very fun especially when you can make something within a shorter period of time. You never want to lose interest in what you are working on so small items can be a good way to open up new doors to creativity.

Rule Of Thumb

CHAIR: When you are making a chairs it isn’t structurally sound unless you can lean back on its hind legs and rock back and forth.  It’s the best way to test for high quality since someone will always do it.

TABLE: Use the best quality seasoned wood for the table top. Any tight joints and flat surface will want to move around and a project can be a bust within a few month. Same goes for cutting boards, be sure to dry out the barrel wood fully before glueing anything up.

Well I hope this little blog got your brain filling up with a few of your own ideas. Always remember to be safe, wear eye protection and have fun.

Whiskey Barrel Platter

“The Whiskey Barrel Platter can can be used to display any kind of arrangements.”

Whiskey Barrel PlatterThis platter is made completely from reclaimed Whiskey Barrels. The staves that are joined together have slight curve which creates the ideal surface any king of arrangements. The base is made from old whiskey barrel tops and bottoms. Will make a great center pieces for any whiskey enthusiast. Finished with Mineral Oil and Bees Wax.

Whiskey Barrel Platter

A few month ago when I purchased a full truck load of Whiskey Barrels ,I kind of had a hunch that I will have plenty of extra material for new project. That is why last week I went on a mission to come out with a few small products that can be sold at a lower cost to ensure not wasting any left over staves.

Whiskey Barrel PlatterSurprisingly it wasn’t too hardtop think of what I wanted to be selling, however to make my product stand out was a little trickier. Once I made my cutting boards, bottle openers and coasters, I thought about something more of a display item.

For this Whiskey Barrel Platter design I figured to stay simple to make sure it will be obvious where the material came from. When designing smaller house hold items I find it very important to show of the material authenticity. This can be hard when there isn’t much surface area.

The Whiskey Barrel Platter is ready to be purchased in the Recycle Bin section of the online store.

NEW Whiskey Barrel Lounge Chair

“The NEW Whiskey Barrel Lounge Chair is here!”

The NEW Whiskey Barrel Lounge ChairThis is true and now you can be the first one to own the NEW Whiskey Barrel Lounge Chair. If you already an owner of a Hungarian Workshop product you definitely don’t want to miss out on our latest creation.

Made completely out of old Whiskey Barrels, (as usual) this lounge chair is designed simply for relaxing. Ideal for any room in the house and can be a beautiful piece in the office to impress clients and co-workers. Each chair is handcrafted with care and finished with high quality Brazilian Rosewood Oil to bring out the wood’s natural patinas while protecting it. Whether you’re reading a book, playing on your mobile device or just enjoying your favorite whiskey, this is one lounge chair you won’t want get out of.

Whiskey Barrel Lounge Chair | Hungarian WorkshopThis chairs designed actually plays a pretty important roll for my company, the Hungarian Workshop. When we construct our Whiskey Barrel Furniture we usually are left with a whole bunch of the smaller 1.5″ wide staves that we couldn’t use. By using mostly our thin left overs, I improved material usage and profit margins. YAY!

I Once I started playing around getting the seating in correct shape I was aiming for, the rest then just started falling into right place. By using one or two design elements from our other pieces I was able to create a sturdy foundation that can with stand very heavy loads. Surprisingly I didn’t even try to draw anything down or start at any standard measurements. Most often when I try to do that, the whole plan goes up in smoke and I end up free handing everything. Sometime this method works great however the finished product can be so different you may find a completely new piece starring back at you.

Whole Planet Foundation

“Whole Planet Foundation ’s mission is poverty alleviation through microcredit in communities around the world that supply Whole Foods Market stores with products.”

Their Approach

Whole Planet Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization established by Whole Foods Market. They provide grants to microfinance institutions in Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East. Who in turn develop and offer microenterprise loan programs, training and other financial services to the self-employed poor.

Founded

Whole Planet Foundation was born out of Whole Foods Market’s desire to give something back to those who have helped them succeed. While focusing on the persistent problem of world poverty and hunger. The foundation was formed with the entrepreneurial spirit of Whole Foods Market in partnership with Professor Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank, co-recipients of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

Whole Planet Foundation - Donated Wine Barrel Chair | Hungarian WorkshopThe Charity Event

Yesterday the Hungarian Workshop donated a Wine Barrel Chair and a Whiskey Barrel Skateboard to a Whole Planet Foundation fund raiser. The event took place at Hess Brewing Company in North Park, San Diego. The whole place was jam pack with good people, great beer, delicious food and live music. It was basically a fun party that I’m glad I was apart of.

Whole Planet Foundation charity event at Hess Brewing Co. | Hungarian WorkshopThe items we donated sold very well, it was exciting to see people have a bidding war over something I made. The Whiskey Barrel Skateboard was something that people who don’t even skateboard wanted. A unique piece like that usually brings people to take second look. The Wine Barrel Chair was the hot ticket item of the night and it sold for 4 times the amount from the starting price!

Over all it was a great time with huge turnout of people. Next year I’ll be prepared to donate more items and put the word out for the Whole Planet Foundation.

How to care for wine barrel furniture

“Restore and learn how to care for wine barrel furniture the right way.”

The Wine Barrel Love Seat (How to care for wine barrel furniture) - Hungarian WorkshopTaking care of outdoor furniture doesn’t have to be a hassle. Most importantly if you keep up with a simple maintanace routine, the job should never turn into a long weekend chore. In this “How to care for wine barrel furniture” blog I will go over a couple maintenance techniques, what products to use and the ideal places to keep your Wine or Whiskey Barrel furniture during the seasons to minimize the ware and tare.

Oil Finish

With our barrel furniture I use an oil finish. Brazilian Rosewood Oil by a company called Penofin to be exact. An oils finish will absorb into the wood and protect from the inside. I find this to be the best because of the simple application and great protection it provides. Not to mention, 90% of my customers like a natural kind of finish with no glossy surfaces. Any oil finish (Teak Oil, Tung Oil Linseed Oil, etc.) will work well as long as you apply it periodically. The rule of thumb I go by is when water stops beading up on the woods surface, the wood starts to gray or when it feels dry to the touch, then it is time for a fresh coat. You can apply oils with a brush, rag or sprayer. Just be sure to wipe away the extra build up.

Whiskey Barrel Bench (How to care for wine barrel furniture) - Hungarian WorkshopVarnish

When you use a varnish maintenance is very very low. Pretty much once you apply it, you most likely won’t have to do anything for minimum a year. But in reality, that depends on the type of varnish you go with. If you decide to go this route I recommend using a heavy duty marine varnish (Sikkens, Man-O-War. etc.) for maximum durability, because when it’s finally time to re-finish the furniture there will be a lot of sanding. The last thing you want to is to go through this process often. Different type of varnishes are available and all home improvement centers and boating stores. Since I pretty much never use this stuff I highly encourage you to go online and see what others prefer and use.

Whiskey Barrel Furniture (How to care for wine barrel furniture) - Hungarian WorkshopLocation

Where you keep your barrel furniture is very important when it comes to the life expectancy of the product. Obviously keeping them indoors away from any weathering is the best. When you place them outside be sure to put them in a covered patio area with minimal sun shine. Be aware that the sun will always do far more damage than rain because white oak is naturally durable agains moisture. (Hence the reason why it’s used in barrel making) Keeping them off grass that get water a lot is vital. Many lawn furniture will start rotting on the bottom from being in a spot where it can never fully dry. If you happen live in an area where there is harsh winters, think putting the furniture in storage or buying a cover for season.

Whiskey Barrel Chair in Cleveland ArtJust finished driving back from Cleveland Art in Los Angeles, where I dropped off eight brand new Whiskey Barrel Adirondack Chairs. Cleveland Art is an awesome store that sells very unique furniture which you just can’t find anywhere else. Along with many beautiful Hand Blown lighting fixtures that is made by the owner and employees. With two locations in Los Angeles it is the must see destination. (606 N. La Brea Avenue Los Angeles, CA  90036 and 110 N. Santa Fe Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Whiskey Barrel Chair in the big city! | Hungarian WorkshopI meat the owner of Cleveland Art, Jason Wein over a year ago who I have been doing business with ever since. For the past I have been suppling the store with my Wine and Whiskey Barrel furniture. The Whiskey Barrel Chairs have been a huge hit in Los Angeles. ( I wonder if any big celebrities have ever purchased my one of my chairs, ha.) My up-cycled Whiskey Barrel Chairs seem to be a perfect fir for their stores because most the items they sell have an amazing history behind them. 3D Cutting Boards

“Found a new artist who has a great talent making beautiful 3D Cutting Boards!”

3D Cutting Board | Hungarian WorkshopThe new 3D Cutting Board design will make everyone take a second glance just to make sure their eyes weren’t playing tricks. This complex arrangement of pieces takes a precise layout to get that great three dimensional illusion. It can be a bit time consuming but definitely worth the time and patients. Serving delicious cheeses and wine on a 3D Cutting Board during your next get together will ensure that it’s a wonderful conversation piece.

3D Cutting Boards will come in many shapes and sizes, but for now since this is the first one we have for sale I will only cover this specific one. The featured board here is made out of Padauk & Euro Beach Wood. Padauk has a very unique reddish orange coloration and is moderately heavy, strong, and stiff, with exceptional stability. It’s a popular hardwood among hobbyist woodworkers. Beech is typically a pale cream color, sometimes with a pink or brown hue. Grain is straight, with a fine to medium uniform texture.

One of the main and most important part about these pieces are that they are also have been up-cycled! If you ever get a chance to go to a lumber yard you will be pleasantly surprised to see what great material makes it into the cull bin. Often woodworkers will need only certain amount of material and they may cut off a foot or two and leave it behind for artists who just happen to have a great idea.

Be sure to visit back soon and keep an eye out of what new items may show up in the Recycle Bin. Don’t forget to sign up for our online news letter to receive coupon codes and new product information.
