How to care for wine barrel furniture

“Restore and learn how to care for wine barrel furniture the right way.”

The Wine Barrel Love Seat (How to care for wine barrel furniture) - Hungarian WorkshopTaking care of outdoor furniture doesn’t have to be a hassle. Most importantly if you keep up with a simple maintanace routine, the job should never turn into a long weekend chore. In this “How to care for wine barrel furniture” blog I will go over a couple maintenance techniques, what products to use and the ideal places to keep your Wine or Whiskey Barrel furniture during the seasons to minimize the ware and tare.

Oil Finish

With our barrel furniture I use an oil finish. Brazilian Rosewood Oil by a company called Penofin to be exact. An oils finish will absorb into the wood and protect from the inside. I find this to be the best because of the simple application and great protection it provides. Not to mention, 90% of my customers like a natural kind of finish with no glossy surfaces. Any oil finish (Teak Oil, Tung Oil Linseed Oil, etc.) will work well as long as you apply it periodically. The rule of thumb I go by is when water stops beading up on the woods surface, the wood starts to gray or when it feels dry to the touch, then it is time for a fresh coat. You can apply oils with a brush, rag or sprayer. Just be sure to wipe away the extra build up.

Whiskey Barrel Bench (How to care for wine barrel furniture) - Hungarian WorkshopVarnish

When you use a varnish maintenance is very very low. Pretty much once you apply it, you most likely won’t have to do anything for minimum a year. But in reality, that depends on the type of varnish you go with. If you decide to go this route I recommend using a heavy duty marine varnish (Sikkens, Man-O-War. etc.) for maximum durability, because when it’s finally time to re-finish the furniture there will be a lot of sanding. The last thing you want to is to go through this process often. Different type of varnishes are available and all home improvement centers and boating stores. Since I pretty much never use this stuff I highly encourage you to go online and see what others prefer and use.

Whiskey Barrel Furniture (How to care for wine barrel furniture) - Hungarian WorkshopLocation

Where you keep your barrel furniture is very important when it comes to the life expectancy of the product. Obviously keeping them indoors away from any weathering is the best. When you place them outside be sure to put them in a covered patio area with minimal sun shine. Be aware that the sun will always do far more damage than rain because white oak is naturally durable agains moisture. (Hence the reason why it’s used in barrel making) Keeping them off grass that get water a lot is vital. Many lawn furniture will start rotting on the bottom from being in a spot where it can never fully dry. If you happen live in an area where there is harsh winters, think putting the furniture in storage or buying a cover for season.

3D Cutting Boards

“Found a new artist who has a great talent making beautiful 3D Cutting Boards!”

3D Cutting Board | Hungarian WorkshopThe new 3D Cutting Board design will make everyone take a second glance just to make sure their eyes weren’t playing tricks. This complex arrangement of pieces takes a precise layout to get that great three dimensional illusion. It can be a bit time consuming but definitely worth the time and patients. Serving delicious cheeses and wine on a 3D Cutting Board during your next get together will ensure that it’s a wonderful conversation piece.

3D Cutting Boards will come in many shapes and sizes, but for now since this is the first one we have for sale I will only cover this specific one. The featured board here is made out of Padauk & Euro Beach Wood. Padauk has a very unique reddish orange coloration and is moderately heavy, strong, and stiff, with exceptional stability. It’s a popular hardwood among hobbyist woodworkers. Beech is typically a pale cream color, sometimes with a pink or brown hue. Grain is straight, with a fine to medium uniform texture.

One of the main and most important part about these pieces are that they are also have been up-cycled! If you ever get a chance to go to a lumber yard you will be pleasantly surprised to see what great material makes it into the cull bin. Often woodworkers will need only certain amount of material and they may cut off a foot or two and leave it behind for artists who just happen to have a great idea.

Be sure to visit back soon and keep an eye out of what new items may show up in the Recycle Bin. Don’t forget to sign up for our online news letter to receive coupon codes and new product information.

The Recycle Bin

“The Recycle Bin will be a great place to find unique and one of kind items!”

The Recycle Bin

The Recycle Bin is the Hungarian Workshop‘s brand new category link within the Online Store section of our website.  The Recycle Bin will mostly feature rare pieces that we might not make again or new house hold items that just don’t fall under the furniture category.

The whole reason The Recycle Bin got started was because with each barrel furniture project we made, we always ended up with just too much scrap. Most often some guys will collect the cut off pieces and take them home to use during BBQ-ing. The white oak burns hotter that other woods and it adds great flavor to most meats when used for smoking. However, even though a good amount of scrap wood was being used up, we were still coming up too much.

The simple answer was just to go ahead, bundle up the wood and sell it for burning and BBQ-ing. But, that just did not sit right with me because a lot of that wood still had so much character and history. It’s just seemed like shame just to burn them. A few days later I started playing with the left over material on my free time and come out with a few easy ideas the salvage more of the left over barrel pieces. Most of those items will be located and up for grabs in The Recycle Bin. Along with a few NEW kitchen utensils made from scraps left over from lumber yards and hardwood stores.

Be sure to visit the The Recycle Bin often to see what new creations we have made and don’t forget to sign up for our email newsletter to find out about spacial deal and to receive coupon codes that will save you big on your next purchase.

Barrel Furniture

Wine & Whiskey Barrel Furniture

Barrel Furniture by The Hungarian Workshop
Whiskey Barrel Furniture | The Hungarian Workshop

Barrel furniture have been around for a very long time. But in the recent years many people have started to take a great interested in them. Whether you are a Wine enthusiast or a Whiskey advocate you will sure to find a piece that stands out and you’ll feel you must have.

Whiskey Barrel Furniture –

Whiskey Barrel Furniture are my favorite to make. From the shape of the barrels to the smell the wood gives off when making a new cut, I just love the material. Whiskey Barrels have come charred in the inside. The burnt wood is what give the whiskey its color and great taste. Once sanded down to smooth finish it leaves the nice dark black colors. The outside of the barrel will usually have a beautiful dark green and or brown patina. The American Oak that has been used for the past decade is fully aged and hardened in a way that you simply can not find any other kind of reclaimed material.

Wine Barrel Furniture | Hungarian WorkshopWine Barrel Furniture –

Wine Barrel Furniture a very popular. Just about everyone adores the beautiful red, burgundy and purple colors that the wine stains the wood with. Often new clients assume we stain the furniture artificially with a chemical stain. Once they learn that it’s just from the actual wine they fall in love with them even more. The furniture pretty much sell them self at that point. The outside of the barrel typically will be a nice golden brown and light beige. The contrast between the two colors work together amazingly. Any Wine Barrel piece will definitely give a room a huge boost in brilliance.

Type of Barrel Furniture:

We carry quite a few new items now. It all started with out Adirondack style lounge chairs. In addition to them we made side tables & ottomans then we moved into coffee tables. The Bar stools, bar chairs and bar tables are a huge seller for pubs and restaurants. Eventually we ended with dinning tables and dining chairs. Edible San Diego |Hungarian Workshop

The Hungarian Workshop will be featured with photos and an interview in Edible San Diego!

It all started around June when I decided to put a small add up in the window of People’s Market in Ocean Beach CA.  A local grocery store that specializes in organic and healthy products. A few days later I received an email from a writer named Enrique Gili who works for, you guessed it Edible San Diego. We exchanged a few emails talking about the furniture and he mentioned that I would be an ideal candidate for a little interview. I was very excited and thrilled about the idea of having an actually interview in a magazine where I can tell the Hungarian Workshop’s story. Enrique said the article will not be published till late Fall and he will be in touch sometime before that.

Photo Shoot for Edible San Diego | Hungarian Workshop

Finally in mid September the I got call I was waiting for. Enrique and I met up in a local coffee shop that incidentally carried few of my chairs. I felt like it was the perfect place. It was a great feeling sharing my ups and downs and accomplishment with someone who paid so close attention and had so many questions. After we fished, Enrique asked me to send him a few photos in case the editor wants to include one along with the article. I said no problem I have plenty of photos and also friends who would love to shoot new pictures.

A week went by and I was just setting up a meeting to take a couple pictures when I received a call from Edible San Diego saying that the articles will be a bit bigger and now they are sending me one of their personnel photographers. Next thing I know we are at the shop with lights and cameras shooting hundreds of photos!

Be sure to keep an eye out for the Hungarian Workshop in the next few issues of Edible San Diego.

Oak Garden Furniture – Timeless And Gorgeous

The “New” yet “Old” oak garden furniture are huge hit around the country! Made from Wine & Whiskey Barrel, will be an excellent conversation piece for years to come.

Oak Garden Furniture Whiskey Barrel Bench | Hungarian WorkshopOak garden furniture have been around for many many years, but not like this. The concept of recycling and re-purposing material is making a huge come back. And what better way to do something good for the environment than reusing material like wood. Preventing the chopping down more trees that have been around for decades is always a big plus. The Hungarian Workshop has up-cycled well over 200 barrels so far and there is no sign on slowing down. In fact it feels just like the beginning with a tremendous head start while having a great company by our side support us: Stone Brewing Company!

More often than not you will see  Wine and Whiskey Barrels for sale as planter boxes. That is another alternative to reusing the material, however that will only last so long. People tend to forget that White Oak is very hardy wood with a lot of great characteristics which is why it makes works great for to be oak garden furniture.

Wine Barrel Oak Garden Furniture by The Hungarian WorkshopWhite Oak is highly weather proof and resistant to rot. Hence why it has been used to make barrel for last hundreds of years. The aged wood is very dense and hard while not too hard on tools and sands with a bit of ease. No need for staining or a varnish finish because the natural patina’s left behind from wineries and distilleries say so much more while preserving its unique history.

Whiskey Barrel Furniture at Stone Brewing Company

“We received another large order from Stone Brewing Company, there will be three more locations with our furniture.”

Stone Brewing Company sent us a whole truck load of barrels! This was definitely a great birthday! Last Thursday on the 22nd, Stone Brewing Company sent the Hungarian Workshop a truck full of Whiskey Barrels. Usually we do the pick up our self, but this time there was just too much for us the handle alone. I literately had to get another storage unit just for Stone’s barrel. There will be some busy weeks ahead!

Whiskey Barrels from Stone Brewing Company

It all started when I received an email from Stone Brewing Company asking me if I have made any tables yet. Luckily it was a perfect timing because I just finished up Wine & Whiskey Barrel Dining Chairs and Bar Stools. Therefore I was just in the middle of designing some new tables to go with them!

I sent over an email with links to my new items available for sale and next thing I knew we were discussing have a truck bring me 50 barrels! First thing I did I went out and got another storage place to receive such a big shipment. I already have a storage unit full of Wine Barrel Staves and there was just no more room. Ha-ha! The best part was that the truck was scheduled to arrive on my birthday, which made a hell of a proud day for me. I have done plenty of work with Stone Brewing Company but this would be the first time they sent me an actually Stone semi truck full of Whiskey Barrels!

Stone Brewing Company sent a full truck! Unloading all the Whiskey Barrels went very smoothly, thanks to the driver who was very helpful. The storage unit was pretty much completely full and had an amazing aroma of old Whiskey Barrels. As soon as we were done unloading, I was ready to sit back and enjoy a delicious Stone beer and relax for the rest of the day. Right now the Hungarian Workshop has some very busy weeks ahead but don’t hesitate to order anything you like. We are still offering big discounts on our Social Media websites.
