We at the Hungarian Workshop have been up-cycling wine and whiskey barrels for over a decade. We have shipped world wide and have a reputation for creating fine quality works of “art”. Functional art that is. We try to focus on the creativity of using mainly barrel and only barrel material in our furniture. By this I mean you wont see a bunch of factory produced parts with a couple barrel staves thrown in and calling it barrel furniture. Next time you find some inexpensive “barrel furniture”, just take a look at what percent of material actually came from the barrel.

One of our best sellers is our Whiskey Barrel Saddle Bar Stools. This is a design that is simple and very very functional. It is sleek, it can be stowed under a counter easily and it is made 100% of only barrel wood. Even better that this design calls for lots of skinny smaller staves. We accumulate theses by the pallet full so being able to use them for other than fire wood makes me feel better. We try to use and donate scraps but the amount we have is tremendous. In my down time I usually am trying to figure out a new way to use left over material. After all, it is money on the table.

When is comes to shipping our furniture everything ships for “FREE”. Meaning the cost to get it to you is already in price. No extra surprise delivery chargers. With a way of the internet market these days you have to offer this “free” shipping concept. Unfortunately this has sky rocketed the price of our lounge chairs. Anything we have to ship as freight costs almost just as much as the furniture it self. This is because our chairs don’t require any assembly. We could design something you would need to assemble then just ship with FedEx. But, then you would end up with some rickety or wobbly crap you have to spend time trying to put together. Most of our customer prefer the additional cost where the chairs just get dropped off and thats it.

We have been sourcing our barrels from Kentucky for over a decade now. The amount of work that goes into making a barrel is tremendous so giving them a second life is must. Most barrels get just chopped up into planters or simply used as decor. Even tho they dry apart and collapse thats how most see their final days. Barrel don’t have any glue or nails so once they are empty, the oak starts to shrink, and the rings start to fall off. Some try to salvage by screwing each stave to the band but that only works to a certain point. In other words, you end up with is a rickety old mess. Each of our furniture pieces are handmade by expert craftsman. All staves are cleaned and sanded smooth just enough to leave the oaks patina while showing off its beautiful history. The Kentucky Barrel wood will have charring on the inside and all sorts of unique color patterns on the outside. For instance, some are light brown, dark brown, some red from the rusted steel and even deep forest greens.

In the past we did a line of Interior leather line which was widely popular. However, as the pandemic hit our suppliers weren’t able to get us all the leather we needed in a steady stream. So for two years we had to pull the line and focus on coming out with a few new things. As the time past we were able to get back on track slowly. So to start we are reintroducing the wine and whiskey barrel bar stools with leather cushions. These have been a huge hit for home and commercial customers as well. These stools provide the same reclaimed rustic charm but with a elegant addition along with maximum comfort. The Italian Full Grain Leather is soft and beautiful and with the color options you can choose which one fits your kitchen or bar best.

We have two reds, Merlot and Sangria. One is dark and deep and the other is light and vibrant. The three browns are Bourbon, Espresso and Scotch. Bourbon is a light traditional western brown while Scotch is a smokey tan. Espresso is nice rich coffee/chocolate brown. Last is Stout our black. This goes awesome with a line of whiskey barrel stools if you want to keep things dark.

An important fact to keep in mind while looking through our photos is that the leather will always look much lighter in the pictures because of the photo studio lights. The color swatches will showcase their shades much more accurately. Another important fact about themItalian leather is that they are full grain. Which means the hides can have imperfections. Meaning the cow could have had a scar or skin blemishes. The reason we chose this style is because it goes much better with our reclaimed wood. All real and natural patinas.

The bar stools we currently are making are the Saddle stools, available in 5 different heights. The Swivel Bar Stools which come in two heights and one version with an additional backrest. And finally the Bar Chair which is our most intricate design. It resembles our lounge chair but with a stool base to raise of the ground for an appropriate bar table height.

The Saddle Bar Stools are slim and wide. Perfect for smaller ares where stowing them away when not in use is important. The seat is wide enough for maximum comfort while the depth is kept minimal. The design is very robust and great for all around use. The five available heights are 18″, 24″, 26″, 28″, and 30″.

Most kitchen islands are 36″ and most bars are 42″. For these you would want a 26″ and a 30″ seat height. However, do often make them at custom height if necessary. They are the smaller and more round cabernet barrels which we at the Hungarian Workshop like to save for bar stools and bar tables. (Any larger wine barrels are better saved for our lounge chairs.) The luxury wine barrel swiveling barstools on sale will come in a set of 3 pieces. 2 bar stools and 1 bar table. They will be available in 30″ & 26″ seat heights. The 30″ is ideal for 42″ counters which are usually commercial and home bars. The 26″ is best for home kitchen islands which normally measure at 36″. The swivels we use are called memory swivels. These can rotate 180 degrees and return to a front facing position when not in use. This is a great attribute if you are looking to keep things tidy and neat. They are also commercial rated so also ideal for heavy-duty usage. The footrest of our barstools are also the barrel’s hoops. While adding structural stability to the base they work great for resting ones feet.

When it comes to outdoor living our signature lounge chairs are must have. We have made over 1100 of them! They come in a couple versions: Wine or whiskey, Wide or narrow top backrest and the option as a rocker too. The rocking chairs we make are the best available on the market. You probably hear that claim all the time but an important fact about ours is that we recurve the rocking stave to perfection.

This means that the bottom stave which you rock back and fort on is steamed for a couple hours then curved to the ideal shape for proper motion. This concept is actually a must if you want a rocking chair. Whiskey barrels have a very slight curve only which almost have no rocking motion at all. The shortest and widest wine barrels will come close to be a great rocker but those are also rare. For these reasons the best concept was just to make our own custom bottom staves.

French and American white oak is highly resistant to weathering and it’s very durable. I even have my first chair still which was made back in 2012. It might be rustic and faded in color but structurally it is still solid. French & American white oak is an amazing wood. They are highly resistant to rot and very robust. French oak is more on the lighter side when it comes to density. As well as its color and patinas.. When you see a wine barrel most often it will be much more cleaner looking than an old whiskey barrel. They might even hold their shape as a barrel for longer period of time when they are empty and start to dry. Visually these are great characteristics from recycled lumber. Wine barrels make for awesome home decor and other small accessories. The only downside is when you use wine barrels for major big furniture designs you will have to pick very carefully for the best barrel staves. Luckily for us we have hundreds of barrels on hand so that is no problem for us.

Our favorite is the American white oak which whiskey barrels are made from. We do often stumble upon a wine barrel made from American white oak but that is rare. As the whiskey barrel dries and ages the wood becomes even more dense. When you work with this material you and your tools can definitely tell the difference between wine and whiskey wood. The colors and patinas of whiskey is much more darker. Not to mention the inside off the barrel is charred so instead of a charming wine color you have a deep burnt black.

We have lots of Wine and Whiskey barrel furniture designs. The most popular are the lounge chairs and bar stools. Our handcrafted Whiskey Barrel Bar Stools That Swivel come in two versions and available in two height options. The swiveling bar stools can come with either a backrest or no backrest. They are also available in a 26 inch or 30 inch seat height. The 26″ is ideal for 36″ counter height tables like kitchen islands and the 30″ is best for bar height tables that are usually 42″. The design is ideal for home and commercial use. We have sold plenty to restaurants and tasting rooms. Incase you have an unusually table height we can also make custom heights as well.

However, if you are looking for something much more intricate I would recommend our very beautiful bar chairs. These are a combination of our bar stools and lounge chairs. These of course come with a backrest and arms rest while also much more wider than the bar stools. They also swivel and well and can be made in custom height if needed. The bar chairs we don’t usually keep in stock so please be prepared to wait 2-4 weeks to receive them.

In this paragraph I will discuss the barrel types we use. If you decided on the design you like best but not sure whether to pick Wine or Whiskey here are a couple key facts about the wood type. Wine will be much for lighter in color. The outside of the barrel will have much lighter patinas keeping the oak looking clean and golden brown. The inside of the wood will most likely have a red, burgundy or purple colored staining front the wine. Please not that after a few years he wine colors will fade away. The star from the wine is organic and after being exposed to the air the colors will start to fade. This will be much faster if in direct outdoor sunlight.

If you choose whiskey barrel wood the outside of the barrel wood will be darker and how lots of different patinas. Dark greens, browns and reds from the oxidized metal bands. Don’t worry all harsh ware and tare on the barrel is sanded smooth and clean leaving a magnificent reclaimed lumber with a rich history. The inside of a whiskey barrel is charred so that side of the wood will be black. After we wire will that side smooth we clear coat the seating parts to prevent any black residue to come off.
