The New Wine Barrel Wall Panels

Wine Barrel Wall Panels

We have been working hard on developing our new wine barrel wall panels. The most important thing was to find a way to minimize the work load that usually goes into installing barrel wood onto wall. Most places will use full length staves or cut up pieces which then need to be nailed and glued up individually. That is what usually makes the whole process of using reclaimed wood a nightmare. If you have the know how and time, I guess you wont mind but most people unfortunately don’t.

Our concept was to make purchasing and then seeing the final product installed the shortest time possible. We have tons and tons of wine barrel wood in stock to make the turn around time only a few weeks. Or only a few days before shipping if we have panels ready. You probably don’t want to be waiting months to turn your dream wine room into a reality.

The new Wine Barrel Wall Panels are here and available now!!! Turn your wine cellar or wine bar into an elegant room to sip your favorite red.

With a few simple tools any handyman/carpenter can easily install these panels in minutes or if there are lots of intricate cuts a few hours. The whole panel concept is to maximize the amount of barrel wood you are putting up at a time. The bigger chunks available, the faster the job will be. The most important factor to remember is if you are doing a large open wall, the panel will be flying up in minutes. The solid backboard also has pre-drilled pilot holes spaced at stud gaps 32″ to help with this. With a dab of construction adhesive like Liquid Nails to make the job solid as possible. If you wont be hitting any studs just be sure to use a wall anchors and a little more Liquid Nails. A finishing nail gun with the Liquid Nails will make the small unique cuts stay in place. The Wine Barrel Wall Panels work really great for the cutting as well. Since the panels is solid you can cross cut and rip cut with easy. Again many pieces at a time, not individually.

We should have a video up as well soon to help with any sort of installation question.

Whiskey Barrel Wall Tiles

Whiskey Barrel Wall Tiles

We have been working on our new Whiskey Barrel Wall Tiles for a while now and they are finally ready for purchase. Our new design allows for a very simple installation that can be done with ease and quick. A full size panel covers 3 sq ft at a time and has a solid backboard which can be cut in any direction. The back board also has pre-drilled pilot holes spaced out at stud gap lengths. After you place the first one level and on studs the rest can be installed very fast. This system was created for customers and clients who are looking to cover a large area but don’t want to glue up individually barrel pieces at a time.

If you are worried about not hitting studs please do not worry. The panels can also be drilled into standard drywall with construction adhesive on the back. Wall anchors for the screws is recommended when you are installing lots of panels going upwards. Each panel weights 9-10 lbs so proper installation is very important. Especially if you don’t have anything underneath the bottom row like baseboards or a counter.

Beautiful whiskey barrel wall in minutes.”

If you are looking to cover an area like backsplashes which will most likely require lots of intricate cuts the best method is to use finish nails and construction adhesive. This is also a very quick method just be sure your glue is setting before you pile on the rows above. Pease remember that these are genuine oak barrel wood which is very hearty and dense.

The panels sell at $35 a square feet with FREE SHIPPING. A box has 5 panels are will cover approximately 15 square feet. After you order if we don’t have in stock please allow a few weeks for production. We will have a video up in the next few weeks to help with the installation.

If you have any question please feel free to contact us.

New Batch of Whiskey Barrels

A few weeks ago I had to take a couple of days off from still trying to catch up with some Christmas back orders. Feels like it doesn’t matter how soon I start preparing for the holidays it’s never early enough. This time, it was middle of October when I started cleaning barrels tops and milling runners for our very popular whiskey barrel head clocks. Since they are a small home decor product and because of their massive market, they have become our number one holiday seller. Every time I think we have the right amount ready for the end of the year rush, a few days into December the realization hits me. We are going to need at least 25% more clocks ready to ship by next week or we may fall short and have to refund customers. Losing money and more frustratingly disappoint any holiday shoppers isn’t my style.

New Batch of Whiskey Barrels

Long story short, with a few additional hours and couple extra weekends of work, everyone received their holiday gifts safely and on time. The only back orders we had are for buyers who purchased big furniture. Needless to say we did discussed it with them that during the holidays most large items will have to ship after Christmas. Lucky for us our furniture customers totally understand this and are more than happy to wait. So with only a few sets of barstools left on the back order list, it was time to go re-up on barrels.

When it’s time to re-stock barrels I never wait for them to get low. I must feel secure with our inventory because sometimes you do have to search for them which requires lots of calls and emails. After all, wine and whiskey barrels aren’t usually sold down at every nursery or hardware store. Plus if you ever see some, the price tag on them is usually few hundred percent more than what their whole price really is. This is because of their logistics. When a barrel is still moist and solid it can weight up to 125 lbs. They are 34″ tall and about 26″ at their widest point. Shipping one with FedEx Ground can cost up to $250. While freight will be cheaper, the quantity of a full truck load can lag. This is because everyone will ship them only on pallets for easy mobility.

New Batch of Whiskey Barrels

If you want to fill a whole semi from top to bottom you will have to do it yourself. This is definitely possible because carriers usually allow a 2 hour load time. But if you have to drive far or fly to their locations, then it might just be just simpler to rent a big box truck and do it yourself. This is what we do. Sure the gas price and our time can add up but, I like to have peace of mind that we are actually getting the best material and the maximum amount as possible. Loading a truck is hard and dirty work. Hopefully someone has thought you how to lift with your legs before setting off on this strong man exercise. I have moved well over 10,000 barrels and I did develop a good lifting technique. It’s all about quick swift motions and letting the barrel rest on the other barrels as you put them on one another.

Rolling them on the ground should be a no brainer. You can roll them horizontally or upright while slightly on their edge. If you mastered this skill be sure you do it only on floors that don’t matter if they get damaged. The metal bands will most likely dig into the surface. I have seen quite a few hardwood and even concrete floors get ruined this way. The shear weight of the barrel and the metal corner will become like a knife. Don’t worry, I too have accidentally sliced an extension cord like rolling them like this.

The types of barrels we most often get are bourbon whiskey barrel. The distilleries brands will often indued the following: Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey, Four Roses, Barton 1792 and Jack Daniels just to name a few. When getting to their warehouses the barrels are mostly wet and solid. making the loading nice and easy. Not really, it’s hard to double or triple stack a hundred barrels. What I mean by nice and easy is that when a barrel is dry and the stave starting to come loose, the whole barrel looses its structural integrity. At this point as you try to roll them, the rings will be falling off and the barrel will barely stay together. As long as the very top and bottom ring stay you should be good. Even thought loading dried out barrels can be a pain, it’s actually a benefit for us. Why? Well, since we are furniture makers the wood being dry is a must. If they are not then we have several months to go before our tools can even touch them.

When we receive a New Batch of Whiskey Barrels that aren’t dry enough we have to store them outdoors for a few months. Luckily our location is in Las Vegas where it’s a very dry climate. Even if the summer heat isn’t baking them, the winter alone is a very dry time. Sure the few occasional rain storms pass through but even so the lack of moisture in the air stays minimal all year around. As the barrels dry the rings slip off and they start to lean to onside. Gaps between the staves open up and when you can see sun light through them it mean they are ready to be used. This doesn’t mean we break down barrels as we need them for projects. Every month or so I like to break them down and store all the staves and barrel heads neatly on pallets. This way when it’s time to prep material I already have them ready in an orderly fashion.

I will write another blog where I go into detail on the material prep work sometime in the near future. In the meantime if you have any question or comments please feel free to email me. Also, if you are seeking Coupon Codes and would like notification when new products are available please sign yup for our online newsletter.

Have great day!

The NEW Whiskey Barrel Clocks

We have been making clocks from old whiskey barrel tops for over 2 years now. They are very popular and now close to becoming my company’s best seller. During Christmas we made over 100 of them in a 3 week span. If that doesn’t sound like much please realize during those 3 weeks we also made 30 barstools, 50 coasters gift sets and many other small items. It felt like the tools were running 24 7. Not much time for rest during the holidays for us. It is a good thing for sure but I do also like to spend time with my family during that time of year. Anyways, back to the new clock idea I have.

As you may know a barrel has two heads. (tops are called barrel heads). 30% of those barrel heads are usually bad. Just absolute crap. Warped to hell and completely unusable. These barrel tops are normally saved for tap handles and chess pieces. Those are projects where a hefty amount of mill work comes into play. However, just a couple of bad tops per month would easily be enough for those. Which means there is still about a couple 100 useless tops just soaking in the weather all year around.

In the past we did have a very sleek coffee table design that required these messed up tops as well. The table top was made up of cut up tops which were arranged in a subway tile like fashion. Pieces ranged from 2 inches to 4 inches in width and in random lengths. The look was awesome and I actually have one in my living room now. But, the production time for each piece was far too much to be worth while. Milling down a bunch of tops then carefully leveling them to be flat was just too tedious. Production time is very important. If a design takes too long to make, it usually gets the axe within a couple of months. We’ll probably try to keep it around for a while by raising the price but if sales slow down then it eventually lands in the “never mind folder”.

As the clocks are selling like hot cakes the busted barrel head pile kept growing too. There is far too much cool distillery markings on them just to chuck away. Staring at them I often revisit the old coffee table design idea and wonder if there is a faster and better way to make them to bring them back into production. Which of course would let us start using the shitty barrel tops again at a greater scale. As I also looked at one of our barrel head clocks I remembered quite a few people asking us over the holidays if they were available in an XL size. Unfortunately not many whiskey barrels come bigger than a 21 inch diameter top so the answer was always the same. As I kept thinking, I realized clocks are a great seller simply because everyone could use a clock and they are small and can be easily hung anywhere. They can be given as gifts or purchased on a whim.

A sale of a coffee table usually meant the customer wanted or needed that exact design. The market for those is much smaller. Then this thought entered my mind. How about we take the same table top design, shrink it a little to a 32 inch diameter, remove the legs and hang on the wall. Most people frequently purchase decor for their walls and this could be just another cool whiskey barrel wall art. But to make it a huge seller I need to do a more interesting to the layout of the wood. It needed to pop and show… “art”! So the basic subway tile concept needed to be changed. Playing with a design program I come up with a cool yet simple configuration which isn’t too busy for the eyes. It is uniform and clean which is always a good thing. Plus, a great design is one that can be easily replicated multiple times over and over again. Yes the plan was coming together perfectly. Even though I have not made one, it already looked good on paper.

The NEW Whiskey Barrel Clocks

Then another word come to me. Functionality. Most of our customers purchase handmade goods from the Hungarian Workshop because they serve a function. Chairs, rockers barstools and so on can be sat on. Coasters hold drinks and clocks tell time. Time…hmm. If we can turn this new idea so it has more of a function than just looking pretty, then we would be open to yet another market. Yes this needs to be that XL clock that so many people have inquired about. With that in mind now I went searching for the right size clock mechanisms. Boom. Easy as hell I found that the company that makes our current ones that fit the 21 inch clocks make a larger version. Only a few dollars more too. Next came the clock face numbers.

On our small whiskey barrel clocks we use a stencil to create the painted on roman numerals. For this big clock I didn’t want to do that. Most large wall clocks have a focus point that isn’t really the time they tell. It’s often the material which they are made from. To keep focus on the medium, the hours are usually just marked with lines or dots or in some instances nothing at all. With a quick glance out our shop’s window I saw the answer. Another widely discarded material was just staring back at me. The barrel’s metal bands. Six comes on each barrel and these also sit in a giant pile in the back of the shop. To keep the design authentic with barrels, cutting up the barrel bands for the hour markers was the ideal choice. There are plenty of other options available online but adding some big factory made numbers or decor is a big no in my book.

The NEW Whiskey Barrel Clocks

The lines marking the hours will be a nice fit without taking any visual focus from the whiskey barrel wood and their layout. Alright, with all this figured out we are on the home stretch. Now came the edge. We can’t just keep it bare. Seeing the cut sides and plywood underneath is a very cheap look. Not to mention unfinished. To cover them up I decided to go with our barrel end table’s top design. Where we use the metal band to go around the whole table top. Now, the 32″ diameter can’t be covered by just one band. We’ll split two of the bigger ones. This should be no problem and it will also add some structural support to keep the face from any warping.

It is now the end of January 2022 and we are just now finishing up the holiday back orders. This new clock idea should be starting up soon in the next couple weeks. A few prototypes will have to be made at first to work out all the kinks, but I think it will be in our online shop by spring time. I am very excited about this because it will open a whole new door to recycling even more of the barrels we purchase.

As always be sure to sign up for our online newsletter to be notified when new items are available and to receive coupon codes as well. Thank You for stopping by the Hungarian Workshop and have great day. Cheers!

Fine Quality Barrel Head Clocks For The Holidays

We buy our barrels by the hundreds and after we break them down our barrel head inventory stacks up pretty high. Our typical designs with them are usually tables like end tables, nightstands or pub tables. However, we needed to start going through them faster. Each barrel has two heads, so a standard shipment would leaves us with over 300 barrel heads. Our table designs are popular but not enough to use up several hundreds in just a few weeks. The Barrel Head Clocks were a huge hit instantly.

Barrel Head Clocks

“Plenty of Barrel Head Clocks in stock for the 2021 holiday”

We take great pride in focusing on the fine quality craftsmanship for our furniture line, and same for the Barrel Head Clocks. There is a great deal of prep work that goes into a single Barrel Head Clock. Plenty of sanding and char removal needs to be done while maintaining the wood true characteristics and patina. This process can be tricky but we found a way. Most barrel heads are not perfectly flat. This is also another hurdle to over come. With the right amount of milling and utilizing the right design we can get them much more flatter.

Last holiday season it was our biggest seller. We made a big batch of Barrel Head Clocks in November thinking it will hold up through December. We ended up selling out before thanksgiving! Needless to say it was a good problem for sure. The next several weeks we are just playing catch up to keep up with demand. The good news was, we were able to. Not one order shipped late. As all small business probably know, the holiday season is the time to work weekends and overtime.

For the 2021 Holiday season we want to be more prepared so the inventory build started this month. If you are a save shopper and don’t like to wait till the last minute check out our Barrel Head Clocks now.

Modern Rustic Interior Design

“Our hadcrafted furniture line made from reclaimed oak has true characteristics and an authentic history. We have a twist on modern rustic interior design.

First Class Whiskey Barrel Lounge Chair

We make all our furniture from reclaimed Wine and Bourbon Whiskey barrels. Every barrel is made from quarter sawn white oak. When the wood is milled in such way, beautiful tiger stripe like grain patterns can show through. Once its clean sanded, buffed smooth then oiled the wood becomes absolutely gorgeous. The first time I notice the difference I thought all French, American & Hungarian oak needs to be milled this way.

The design aspect that categorizes our furniture in a more modern style would be the over all quality and features of our material. Also the lines and curves of the barrels staves give all our pieces a sleek newer look. Not all rustic items need to have rough edges and nails sticking out from them. Over the past 8 years the Hungarian Workshop has perfect our lounges chairs and have made close to a thousand of them. They are the number one seller and we have shipped all over the US and even few places around the world.

Modern Rustic Interior Design

One of my main goal was to keep our products notably in higher standards than other competitors. In addition, with the constant attention to detail and new innovations we turned into southern California most well known barrel artisans. We have partnered up with Stone Brewing company back in 2012 and have been doing steady business with them. They are opening new locations all the time which always need a Modern Rustic Interior Design.

Most importantly, if you work for a design agency and thinking about using our furniture for a client please email us for our designer discounts. balazs@hungarianworkshop.com
