When we construct our Whiskey Barrel Furniture we usually are left with a whole bunch of the smaller 1.5″ wide staves that we couldn’t use. By using mostly our thin left overs, I improved material usage and profit margins. YAY!

I Once I started playing around getting the seating in correct shape I was aiming for, the rest then just started falling into right place. By using one or two design elements from our other pieces I was able to create a sturdy foundation that can with stand very heavy loads. Surprisingly I didn’t even try to draw anything down or start at any standard measurements. Most often when I try to do that, the whole plan goes up in smoke and I end up free handing everything. Sometime this method works great however the finished product can be so different you may find a completely new piece starring back at you.

Wine & Whiskey Barrel Furniture

The Hungarian Workshop’s main focus is on up-cycled Wine and Whiskey Barrel Furniture. The company started out in 2010 making standard outdoor patio furniture and in 2012 transitioned into repurposing old barrels. Barrels are made from either French, Hungarian or American White Oak. The wood is a solid, sturdy and durable material which is great for furniture and it’s a shame to see them thrown away. Certain wineries and distilleries go through hundreds of barrels a year and I am just glad to know my company is helping out. So far we have turned well over 400 barrels into furniture and we are not showing any signs of slowing down just yet.

These Whiskey Barrel Bar Stools are made out of old and used whiskey barrels that were no longer able to hold and alcohol. Once a distillery has used them for many many years they usually will sell them of to breweries. Most brewers will age their specialty stouts or dark beers in old barrel to give the beers that great hint of whiskey flavors, long with a nice tone of oak-inness. Then after the barrel has been used once it gets a whole new life as furniture. The Whiskey Barrels are made from American White Oak which is an excellent wood for indoor and outdoor furniture. With the right amount of sanding you can keep each stave smooth and leaving just the right amount of charring and patina behind to show of its beautiful characteristics and history.

 The Story

I would here from lots of my customers asking me if I will ever make a bar stool of some sort. As soon as I had a few days where I didn’t have any orders to fill, work and designing began. It took over 3-4 prototypes and couple weeks to get this one just right. The swivel I thought was a must because a large percent of all bar stools have that feature which everyone loves. Plus I have not yet seen a barrel bar chair nor barrel bar stool with one. These chairs are a great seller and everyone who owns them loves them.

The Whiskey Barrels

Each Whiskey Barrel is different, no two barrels are exactly the same. The quarter sawn white oak shows off the woods beautiful grain pattern and characteristics. After a light sanding the surface stays smooth and clean. Leaving behind the barrels old markings and history.

New Stone Brewing Company Locations in Petco Park

“Two new stone brewing company locations by one great stadium!”

New stone brewing company locations right on the roof top by the palm trees! Last week I received an email from one of the project mangers telling me there is yet another new Stone Brewing Company location. I figured it would be just a regular tasting room somewhere ordinary. When I found out it was going to be at Petco Park I was very excited and a bit surprised. Normally I would have heard of a new project going up since the Hungarian Workshop supplies pretty much all their location with at least a few Whiskey Barrel Furniture. Usually orders would take us a few weeks but this time all we had was 4 days.

With opening night just around the corner we put everything on hold and rushed to pick up Stone’s old and used barrels. Luckily San Diego had great weather that week and it was warm and sunny letting the barrels dry out just enough to get started.  After a few hectic days we finished all four chairs 100% by saturday night.New stone brewing company locations in Petco Park | Hungarian Workshop

One of the new stone brewing company locations in Petco Park is on the sixth floor right behind home plate. It is on the rooftop above Hodad’s with a beautiful view of the Coronado bridge and the convention center. Pretty much one of the best locations in the stadium in my book. The other spot is their new tap room down by the lawn area just outside the gates. I was already told they want six more chairs and there will be an order placed for the tap room in the near future!

Whole Planet Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization established by Whole Foods Market. They provide grants to microfinance institutions in Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East. Who in turn develop and offer microenterprise loan programs, training and other financial services to the self-employed poor.

Founded

Whole Planet Foundation was born out of Whole Foods Market’s desire to give something back to those who have helped them succeed. While focusing on the persistent problem of world poverty and hunger. The foundation was formed with the entrepreneurial spirit of Whole Foods Market in partnership with Professor Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank, co-recipients of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

Yesterday the Hungarian Workshop donated a Wine Barrel Chair and a Whiskey Barrel Skateboard to a Whole Planet Foundation fund raiser. The event took place at Hess Brewing Company in North Park, San Diego. The whole place was jam pack with good people, great beer, delicious food and live music. It was basically a fun party that I’m glad I was apart of.

The Whiskey Barrel Skateboard was something that people who don’t even skateboard wanted. A unique piece like that usually brings people to take second look. The Wine Barrel Chair was the hot ticket item of the night and it sold for 4 times the amount from the starting price!

Over all it was a great time with huge turnout of people. Next year I’ll be prepared to donate more items and put the word out for the Whole Planet Foundation.

How to care for wine barrel furniture

Most importantly if you keep up with a simple maintanace routine, the job should never turn into a long weekend chore. In this “How to care for wine barrel furniture” blog I will go over a couple maintenance techniques, what products to use and the ideal places to keep your Wine or Whiskey Barrel furniture during the seasons to minimize the ware and tare.

Oil Finish

With our barrel furniture I use an oil finish. Brazilian Rosewood Oil by a company called Penofin to be exact. An oils finish will absorb into the wood and protect from the inside. I find this to be the best because of the simple application and great protection it provides. Not to mention, 90% of my customers like a natural kind of finish with no glossy surfaces. Any oil finish (Teak Oil, Tung Oil Linseed Oil, etc.) will work well as long as you apply it periodically. The rule of thumb I go by is when water stops beading up on the woods surface, the wood starts to gray or when it feels dry to the touch, then it is time for a fresh coat. You can apply oils with a brush, rag or sprayer. Just be sure to wipe away the extra build up.

When you use a varnish maintenance is very very low. Pretty much once you apply it, you most likely won’t have to do anything for minimum a year. But in reality, that depends on the type of varnish you go with. If you decide to go this route I recommend using a heavy duty marine varnish (Sikkens, Man-O-War. etc.) for maximum durability, because when it’s finally time to re-finish the furniture there will be a lot of sanding. The last thing you want to is to go through this process often. Different type of varnishes are available and all home improvement centers and boating stores. Since I pretty much never use this stuff I highly encourage you to go online and see what others prefer and use.

Where you keep your barrel furniture is very important when it comes to the life expectancy of the product. Obviously keeping them indoors away from any weathering is the best. When you place them outside be sure to put them in a covered patio area with minimal sun shine. Be aware that the sun will always do far more damage than rain because white oak is naturally durable agains moisture. (Hence the reason why it’s used in barrel making) Keeping them off grass that get water a lot is vital. Many lawn furniture will start rotting on the bottom from being in a spot where it can never fully dry. If you happen live in an area where there is harsh winters, think putting the furniture in storage or buying a cover for season.

Which is a good thing, why shouldn’t they have great confidence in their work? But like most often, the company’s sales and clients are an excellent way to tell who has what it takes. Wine & Whiskey Barrel furniture have been around for a very long time and its crazy for one to think theirs are the original. Since reclaimed and recycled material are turning popular these days, more and more business will use it to promote themselves and drive sales. As long as its true and not a gimmick I am totally for it. There is plenty of reusable material out in the world and with a little bit of imaginations & creativity you’d be surprised of the possibilities.

The Hungarian Workshop started just like most custom furniture businesses, in a small garage with limited amount of tools and space. In three and half years we have come a long way, taking on huge volumes and build our clientele list with some big names.
