Whiskey Barrel Skateboards – Tennessee Whiskey Edition

“We have been selling our signature Whiskey Barrel Skateboards for over 5 years! Now, we are offering the limited edition Tennessee Whiskey Barrel Boards.”

The Hungarian Workshop is the originator of the whiskey barrel skateboard movement. Five years ago I plained some staves just the right way and attached them together to create a unique and one of  kind barrel skateboard. Since then our design has been in magazines and even received a full page add in the Wine Enthusiast. Now, with a few extra barrels left over, we are offering the Tennessee Whiskey barrel themed boards. Ideal for any side walk surfers who are looking for a rare and fun item to show off. Or the true whiskey collector looking for that special conversation piece to hang in their man cave.

This is a very limited offer since we don’t usually have these barrels in stock. They are hard to come by and come at a high price. Sometimes we get lucky enough to find a few in our truck loads.

All Whiskey Barrel Skateboards are about 30 inches long and 8-9 inches wide. The decks are one inches thick solid oak and is very heavy duty and durable. The trucks are more of a longboard style cruiser so don’t expect to hit the skateparks up and start grinding right away. If you can, more power to you! Send us a few action shots! I would be happy to post them on our social media sites.

Be sure to sign up for our newsletter this month. We will be offering a couple other Tennessee Whiskey themed furniture. Please note that these are rare and hard to come by barrels so our availability will be scarce.

You can also follow us on our social media site and see what new items we are working on currently!

As always, thank you for stoping by the Hungarian Workshop and have great day.

Wine Barrel Rocking Chairs

“Our Recurved Staves make for a solid and hefty rocking motion no other companies implement in their product.”

Wine Barrel Rocking Chairs

We at the Hungarian Workshop aim to to provide one of kind and the highest quality barrel furniture and home decor available. We have been in business for over six years now and our craftsmanship will speak for it’s self. From my first barrel chair I made, I knew this was the style of woodworking and design I wanted to continue in. Not to mention that obvious and clear sign I received was when I found a random Hungarian Oak Wine Barrel which had my name (Balazs) laser engraved into it. Apparently there is a Hungarian Cooperage who’s company name is same as mine! This is a unique and entertaining story I will leave for another time.

Wine Barrel Rocking Chairs

Wine Barrel Rocking ChairsAfter I made a few Wine Barrel Rocking Chairs I felt something was off. In a bad way. Even though I used some amazing Bear Boat Cabernet Sauvignon barrels which were short and round. They had the most curvature available but not what I would have liked. Most people don’t realize that wine barrels don’t have the proper curvature needed to make a rocking chair. Even the best ones have more of a kink in middle rather than a smooth bend. After this discovery, I know I had to do something which would make the Hungarian Workshop stand out from the rest. If you are a high end woodworker you probably can figure out the solution and method we use to create the Recurved Rocker Staves. If you are not, then it will have to stay as a trade secrete for now. Haha.

Wine Barrel Rocking ChairsOnce we got the bottom staves curved to where the chairs could roll back and forth the ideal amount, I knew we had a leg up on the competition. Soon after the newsletter went out, the products where flying off the shelve. Sort of speak. And even better, our Recurved Bourbon Whiskey Barrel Chairs are the only ones on the market. Whiskey barrels have almost no curvature so to be able to offer a proper whiskey barrel rocker we turned into the number one retailer for them.  Cheers!

Over 750 Barrel Chairs Made!

Wine Barrel Rocking ChairsOur Recurved Wine Barrel Rocking Chairs and recurved Bourbon Barrel Rocking Chairs are also available in an interior version where they feature handcrafted Full Grain Italian Leather Upholstery. We have six leather colors available.

Sometimes our furniture go on sale through our Online Newsletter. I highly recommend signing up. We send out a newsletter once a month and when you sign up you also receive a coupon code instantly just for being a supporter of our craft.

As alway have a great day and Cheers!

Stone Brewing Barrel Chairs

“So far we have handcrafted over 750 of the barrel lounge chairs alone. Those we keep numbered and tagged.”

Stone Brewing Barrel ChairsThis year we will be getting into our 800th barrel lounge chairs. (Stone Brewing Barrel Chairs) We produce anywhere from 100-150 a year. Stone alone will have us make about 20-30 a year. They are an amazing company to work with and since they are opening so many locations world wide the request for more chairs and other furniture keep pouring in. Just last month they were figuring out the logistics on how to get 50 chairs over the Berlin, Germany. Even though it would be a $hit ton of work, we are ready to go for them at any given time.

The phrase Stone Brewing Barrel Chairs is a popular way people refer to our work and even though we are a separate company it I don’t mind it at all. They are one of San Diego’s largest craft breweries. I am happy to be working with Stone. Plus they make my favorite IPA’s.

The barrel lounge chairs line pretty much started over at their Escondido location. If you go browse around in their beer garden you might be able to find chair #2! I have chair #1 on my deck. Over the years the design definitely has been upgraded and new type of hardware and finishes has been implemented as well.

Stone Brewing Barrel Chairs – Hungarian Workshop inventory update:

Stone Brewing Barrel ChairsThis summer I am putting a hold on our Home Decor and Accessories items and a couple of our less frequently ordered furniture. What this means I will be phasing out the “Made To Order” concept. So for a while some items will show up as Out OF Stock. This will give us plenty of time to focus on building a huge inventory. Allowing us to start shipping out order within the week they are ordered. No more waiting 2-3 weeks or sometimes even 4-6 weeks to receive your furniture.

Once we have what i would call the appropriate amount of furniture in stock, we will start building our Home Decor and Accessories items too. Which will work out perfectly since end of summer is when we have to begin for the holiday restock. You can never be too early for the Christmas rush. I feel like for the past years we have been starting a couple weeks earlier and earlier. As your business grows so will your customer base.

Stone Brewing Barrel Chairs – NEW Distillery Brand Available In July

Stone Brewing Barrel ChairsI have been posting about this news a couple times before and because I usually get several emails a month people asking me, I will continue spreading the word. Starting in July the Hungarian Workshop will have quite a few Jack Daniel’s Barrel lounge chair sets available for purchase. We have been collecting them since they are a rare find and also found a couple secrete suppliers. Unfortunately these barrels are not cheap for us but bartering does help. Ha. Sign up for our online newsletter to be in the loop when they official become available.

Cheers!

Jack Daniel’s Barrel Chairs

“… for a limited time while supplies last. ACT NOW if you are a true Tennessee Whiskey fan!”

Next month we will have a few lounge chairs available for the true Jack Daniel’s fan. We received quite few barrels over the years which have America’s most iconic whiskey distillery name branded into them. We will start production later this month and if you are interested you can sign up for our online newsletter to keep track when they are out. If you absolutely don’t want to miss out on them, we can also take pre-orders.

Jack Daniel’s Barrel Chairs

The J.D. Tennessee Whiskey barrel lounge chairs are going to be exactly the same design and dimensions as our Kentucky Bourbon barrel lounge chairs. The main difference will be that the legs and some other staves throughout the chairs will have the J.D. letters branded in to the wood.

A Jack Daniel’s barrel will also have one barrel head branded as well. These we either use as end tables to go along with a set or we turn them into one of kind wall clocks. I wrote a whole entire blog post just on them. (Follow this link if you want to learn how those are made.)

You can sign up for our online newsletter at the top of the page. Just enter your email address and shortly after you will receive a Thank You notification with a useful coupon code also. If you have any question please feel free to contact us or email me directly at balazs@hungarianworkshop.com

SIDE NOTE: This summer season we will be going into a large production movement in order to phase out the “made to order” concept. Because of this you might find a few Home Decor Items OUT OF STOCK and unavailable for purchase. The idea is to be able to ship all products with the week they are ordered.

Cheers!

Jack Daniel’s Barrel Clock

“…some amazing Jack Daniel’s branded barrels which we turn into beautiful works of art.”

Hi there! I guess you are looking for our one of kind barrel clocks that now feature a Jack Daniel’s branded logo. I must mention that if you are serious about purchasing one please ACT NOW. We have a very limited supply and we can not be sure when we will receive more. Our barrel supplier receive their stock from many random distilleries and Jack Daniel’s in not a common one.

Jack Daniel's Barrel ClockOur clocks are handcrafted from genuine American Oak barrels that were used to age delicious whiskeys. Most often they will be Kentucky Bourbon Barrels but sometimes we get lucky enough and find one of America’s most iconic brand Jack Daniel’s. These barrels will feature the company’s name branded into the barrel head (the top) and along the side.

The clocks we make may look simple but I can assure you they are crafted in a much more intricate way. We don’t simply cut off the ends of a barrel to create the body. Many people may not realize that as the barrel wood pieces dry, they will shrink, loosen up and the whole barrel may eventually fall apart. That is why when you see an old barrel the metal bands are usually loose or on the ground.

Our Handcrafted Wall Clocks –

We actually use the left over cut off scraps from our popular furniture line to re-create the round barrel look. This method allows us to make a nice uniform shape. Not to mention, most barrels are actually somewhat oval from the years of aging and pressure they’ve gone through. By taking everything apart, we get access to cut the barrel head into a perfect circle as well.

The next and most important feature of our wall clocks are the hand cut roman numerals. That’s right, no painting or laser engraving here. The clock’s numbers are actually hand crafted from the barrels original steel bands. Quite a long and detailed process but completely worth it. The end result makes for a beautiful artisan piece while staying truly authentic.

The clock’s mechanism are easily interchangable if you would like another type of hands.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us or you can email me directly at balazs@hungarianworkshop.com

Cheers!

The difference between Bourbon and Whiskey

You’ve probably heard it before: all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. If you’re a whiskey (and especially bourbon) drinker, you need to know what that means.

The difference between Bourbon and Whiskey

By definition, whiskey (or whisky, in Scotland) is a spirit distilled from fermented grain mash — grain varieties include wheat, rye, barley, and corn — and then aged in wooden barrels. Whiskey is made all over the world and there are many popular styles including Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey, and American whiskey. The most popular form of American whiskey is bourbon, which has its own specific definition.

“Bourbon needs to be produced in America and made from 51 percent corn, and whiskey does not,” says Maker’s Mark Master Distiller Greg Davis. Bourbon also needs to be stored in new charred-oak barrels, whereas whiskey barrels do need to be oak but not new or charred. “Lastly, to be called bourbon, the liquid needs to be distilled to no more than 160 proof and entered into the barrel at 125.” For other whiskies the liquid must be distilled to no more than 190 proof. David notes that this isn’t just common practice — “it’s actual bourbon law.”

Bourbon regulations are strict because in the 1800’s distillers spent a lot of time adulterating, diluting, and tampering with their whiskies. “Finally, they set some standards with the Bottle in Bond Act of 1897,” says Davis. Essentially, the act requires the spirit to be the product of one distillation season and one distiller at one distillery. “It must be bottled and stored in bonded warehouses under the U.S. government supervision for no less than 4 years. The act has made the U.S. the guarantor of the whiskey’s authenticity and therefore bourbon’s.”

Bourbon is an iconic American spirit, but it wasn’t always thought of so highly. In the early to mid-1900’s, bourbon was considered a “commodity” spirit. It was cheap, bitter, and very bad. “It’s truly remarkable to see what this industry has become,” says Davis. “What most folks don’t know is that while yes, Bill Samuels, Sr., created the recipe that changed the bourbon landscape forever, but it was his wife Marge Samuels who ideated the signature red wax seal, the label, and pretty much the entire look of Maker’s Mark Distillery.” This September, Marge is being inducted into the Bourbon Hall of Fame for her contribution to the bourbon arena.

What Makes a Bourbon: A Cheat Sheet

  • Must be made in the United States.
  • Must contain 51% corn.
  • Must be aged in new oak-charred barrels.
  • Must be distilled to no more than 160 proof and entered into the barrel at 125 proof.
  • Must be bottled at no less than 80 proof.
  • Must not contain any added flavoring, coloring or other additives.

California Wine and Whiskey Barrel Furniture – Information

“Thank You for visiting the Hungarian Workshop! We have a huge variety of barrel furniture and decor. Visit the our Online Store to see all our handcrafted items and craft supplies available in the Recycle Bin. Don’t forget to sign up for our online newsletter to save big on your next purchase.”

California Wine and Whiskey Barrel Furniture-

When time comes to order Whiskey Barrel Furniture or Wine Barrel Furniture there are a few important things to know or learn. We get daily emails and calls about the same questions so I decided to write this blog to help shine light on some of these subjects. Lets get right to it now with the most common ones.

California Wine and Whiskey Barrel FurnitureBarrels – What & How

Wine and Whiskey barrels are made from quarter sawn White Oak. The white oak is highly durable and rot resistant. Ideal for this use. The wood is quester sawn which allows it to curve when steamed into shape. When you see a whole barrel upright, most people don’t realize there is no nails, screws or gluing involved make it. The only thing holding the barrel together is the metal bands. (hoops, rings) The pressure from the bands holds the wet wood together making it water and air tight. As soon as the wood starts to dry, it shrinks and gaps open up. The metal hoops slip off and the entire barrel falls apart. If you want to use them as decor be sure to water them down often to keep them solid. If you keep them indoor, the same will happen but at a much slower rate.

California Wine and Whiskey Barrel FurnitureWhiskey Barrel Furniture – Features & Facts

The inside of these barrels are charred black. The outside wood has darker patinas and the metal bands are mild steel which are dark. The distillery stamping and marking will vary. Most distilleries will only stamp one side of the barrel. And as far as specific whiskey brands go, it is very important to know that most large distilleries make many different whiskeys. For instance Buffalo Trace Distillery also makes Eagle Rare, Blanton’s, W.L. Weller, Van Winkle and etc. So if you are seeking these specific barrels, they won’t actually put these names on there. There will be the actually distillery stamp with dates and batch number and maybe the initials of the name of these smaller whiskeys. Another big request is the Jack Daniel’s barrels. They too don’t burn the logo into all their barrels. The ones you see branded on the side are rare and meant mainly for showrooms and other marketing campaigns.

California Wine and Whiskey Barrel FurnitureWine Barrel Furniture – Features & Facts

The outside of the Wine Barrels are lighter in color and have the silver colored galvanized steel bands. The inside will be stained from the wine but as we all know wine comes in many different shades of red, purple and burgundy. Colors will vary for sure. And I need to mention that some of our barrels are also chardonnay barrels. No color at all. The wood will just be a bit darker. We usually keep these for smaller project. The third important fact about the color stain from the wine is that it won’t last. Because the wine is an organic stain, it will fade from the sun when kept outside.

Wine barrels also vary in size and shape. Cabernet Sauvignon will mostly come in short and round barrels. Others might be taller and skinner with less curvature. When you order multiple wine barrels pieces we always try to keep them uniform by using similar barrels.

Used Whiskey Barrels

“We have plenty of Used Whiskey Barrels. Our main line of furniture include wine and whiskey barrels turned into one of kind solid chairs, pub stools, pub tables, coffee tables and more. In our Recycle bin we often have many reusable craft supplies as well. Check it out NOW.”

Used Whiskey BarrelsThe Hungarian Workshop workshop has been in business for over 5 years. We have created a whole line of barrel furniture made from used wine barrels and used whiskey barrels. We also have an interior leather line and a Home Decor and Accessories section. In the Recycle Bin part of our online store we have full size barrels, barrel staves, barrel bands and barrel cut offs. Please note we only have certain material in stock at a time. If we run out of something it might take a month to accumulate more. But we will always have the full size barrels in stock.

Used Whiskey BarrelsUsed Whiskey Barrels

Our used whiskey barrels are full size 53 gallons. The average size is 22″x22″x34″ and they weight about 100 lbs. Some are more dry and may weigh less. When the barrels start to dry, all you have to do is dump some water on them. When the oak absorbs the moisture it will swell back up and tighten up. It is important to know that barrels are only held together by tension from the metal bands. If they dry completely, the whole barrel will just fall apart. This also includes the barrel heads as well. (the top and bottom) No glue, no nails or screws. You might have known this but incase you didn’t it is important to  mention. You wouldn’t believe how many times I have to explain this to DIY-ers. It is super fun to work with this stuff but it can be tricky.

Used Whiskey BarrelsHow to Order –

To order a couple barrels you can simply use our online shipping calculator. We will ship as Fedex Ground for individual ones. This is costly ($165 just for shipping) but it will arrive at your door step in 3-5 days. Super fast and easy. When you order 4-8 barrels will ship as freight. It may take 2 weeks for this but it will be much cheaper than Fedex Ground. Now if you are looking for 10-20 barrels please contact us first. We can talk to our freight reps and see if we can get a discount rate for such large order. And depends on our inventory stock, we maybe able to give a discount on the barrel prices as well.  We can ship all over the US including Hawaii. If you are out of the country, we can accommodate as well.
