We just received 200 fresh full size 53 gallon Scotch Barrel that have the most intense scotch aroma I have ever had a chance to work with. Our Bourbon Barrels are full size and with distillery brands including Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Heaven Hill, Buffalo Trace etc.
Next week we will be receiving around 200 more and we need to start selling some to make room. Last month I personally broke down almost 200 bourbon barrel to have a huge selection of ready to use staves for our popular furniture line. I must say it’s definitely nice to just pick and go opposed to break down barrels just for specific jobs. The key for this concept can only work with bourbon barrels. That is because all type of whiskey barrels are 90% percent the same. Coopers tend to use the same measurements and dimension for them. Making the furniture process much simpler since we don’t have to bundle them up or keep broken down barrels grouped together.
Wine barrels are a whole different story. We usually don’t have that much on hand so to keep things easy I prefer to leave them whole. When it comes to wine barrel sizes, color, widths and height, they all tend to differ. Most are made from French Oak and many cooperages make them different for the various types of wine. When you make furniture from them it is ideal to use one barrel per piece to keep a nice uniform design.
The Scotch barrel are pretty much the same as the bourbon ones. However they tend to darken up a whole lot more on the outside. Almost a solid dark green color scheme. The inside is charred just like the bourbon ones. The smell of these barrels are often way stronger. If you love a nice smokey, oaky heavy aroma these are the way to go.
