Wine & Whiskey Barrel furniture have been around for a very long time and its crazy for one to think theirs are the original. Since reclaimed and recycled material are turning popular these days, more and more business will use it to promote themselves and drive sales. As long as its true and not a gimmick I am totally for it. There is plenty of reusable material out in the world and with a little bit of imaginations & creativity you’d be surprised of the possibilities.

The Hungarian Workshop started just like most custom furniture businesses, in a small garage with limited amount of tools and space. In three and half years we have come a long way, taking on huge volumes and build our clientele list with some big names. Stone Brewing Company in Southern California, Cleveland Art based out of Ohio is helping us grow bigger and faster everyday. And now with Whole Foods Market on the list I can’t wait to see whats next.

Trying to be looked at as the the best of wine barrel wood working is goal always on my mind. In the past two years I have not worked with any other material and at this point I don’t even mind. The design part of my job is my favorite and on occasion the most hated. Having a new idea in my head and then trying to get on the showroom floor can be a very stress full time. Wine Barrel Chairs at Stone Brewing

If you were wondering who has made the wine barrel chairs at stone brewing, look no further. It was the Hungarian Workshop. It’s hard to believe that were are coming up on two years since I have been doing business with good old Stone. The best part about our relationship is that Stone Brewing Company is actually the ones who got me started with the whole up-cycled barrel furniture business. Working with them has been a blast and I am happy to say we still have plenty of work ahead of us.

If you haven’t had anytime to read through our About Page or Furniture Info Page, I will go ahead and give you the short version here. I first got contacted through my Etsy page by one of the general managers from the Escondido Stone location. They were interested in my Redwood Furniture and with no time they bought a few for their garden area. As I was dropped off their first big order, I noticed a large container overfilling with old dirty Whiskey Barrel Staves. The bistro manager told me take a few pieces back and see if can make an Adirondack style chair. After I made them only one chair, Stone saw this great opportunity and environmentally friendly way to re-cycle their old barrels and rest is history.

It takes one barrel to make one chair. I give the option to all my customers on the backrest style; Open or Closed Tops. Wine barrel chairs at stone brewing most often have the closed top and the Whiskey barrel ones stay open. The reason for that is because Whiskey barrels tend to come with more smaller size stave which are ideal for the open top style and wine barrels with much wider ones that are better for the closed top version.

Just finished driving back from Cleveland Art in Los Angeles, where I dropped off eight brand new Whiskey Barrel Adirondack Chairs. Cleveland Art is an awesome store that sells very unique furniture which you just can’t find anywhere else. Along with many beautiful Hand Blown lighting fixtures that is made by the owner and employees. With two locations in Los Angeles it is the must see destination. (606 N. I meat the owner of Cleveland Art, Jason Wein over a year ago who I have been doing business with ever since. For the past I have been suppling the store with my Wine and Whiskey Barrel furniture. 3D Cutting Boards

The new 3D Cutting Board design will make everyone take a second glance just to make sure their eyes weren’t playing tricks. This complex arrangement of pieces takes a precise layout to get that great three dimensional illusion. It can be a bit time consuming but definitely worth the time and patients. Serving delicious cheeses and wine on a 3D Cutting Board during your next get together will ensure that it’s a wonderful conversation piece.

3D Cutting Boards will come in many shapes and sizes, but for now since this is the first one we have for sale I will only cover this specific one. The featured board here is made out of Padauk & Euro Beach Wood. Padauk has a very unique reddish orange coloration and is moderately heavy, strong, and stiff, with exceptional stability. It’s a popular hardwood among hobbyist woodworkers. Beech is typically a pale cream color, sometimes with a pink or brown hue. Grain is straight, with a fine to medium uniform texture.

One of the main and most important part about these pieces are that they are also have been up-cycled! If you ever get a chance to go to a lumber yard you will be pleasantly surprised to see what great material makes it into the cull bin. Often woodworkers will need only certain amount of material and they may cut off a foot or two and leave it behind for artists who just happen to have a great idea.

The Recycle Bin

“The Recycle Bin will be a great place to find unique and one of kind items!”

The Recycle Bin is the Hungarian Workshop‘s brand new category link within the Online Store section of our website. The Recycle Bin will mostly feature rare pieces that we might not make again or new house hold items that just don’t fall under the furniture category.

The whole reason The Recycle Bin got started was because with each barrel furniture project we made, we always ended up with just too much scrap. Most often some guys will collect the cut off pieces and take them home to use during BBQ-ing. The white oak burns hotter that other woods and it adds great flavor to most meats when used for smoking. However, even though a good amount of scrap wood was being used up, we were still coming up too much.

The simple answer was just to go ahead, bundle up the wood and sell it for burning and BBQ-ing. But, that just did not sit right with me because a lot of that wood still had so much character and history. It’s just seemed like shame just to burn them. A few days later I started playing with the left over material on my free time and come out with a few easy ideas the salvage more of the left over barrel pieces. Most of those items will be located and up for grabs in The Recycle Bin. Along with a few NEW kitchen utensils made from scraps left over from lumber yards and hardwood stores.

Whiskey Barrels have come charred in the inside. The burnt wood is what give the whiskey its color and great taste. Once sanded down to smooth finish it leaves the nice dark black colors. The outside of the barrel will usually have a beautiful dark green and or brown patina. The American Oak that has been used for the past decade is fully aged and hardened in a way that you simply can not find any other kind of reclaimed material.

Wine Barrel Furniture a very popular. Just about everyone adores the beautiful red, burgundy and purple colors that the wine stains the wood with. Often new clients assume we stain the furniture artificially with a chemical stain. Once they learn that it’s just from the actual wine they fall in love with them even more. The furniture pretty much sell them self at that point. The outside of the barrel typically will be a nice golden brown and light beige. The contrast between the two colors work together amazingly. Any Wine Barrel piece will definitely give a room a huge boost in brilliance.

Arrogant Bastard Ale!

A few weeks ago I had some free time to make this special side table for Stone Brewing Co.

“With all the past projects I had the opportunity to work with them on, I knew they would just love the Arrogant Bastard Ale barrel Side table!”

After doing four of their location with their own Whiskey Barrels turned into furniture, I felt like I owed Stone a quit a big thank you. After all, they pretty much kick started my whole business. The kind of credibility they have provided for me has been huge! And, the amount of business I received just from people seeing my work at their locations has been even bigger.

This isn’t going to be a long blog at all, but i just wanted to make sure you all get so see this piece. We are now discussing selling these table at couple of their location that have the a company store. I will keep new information posted on our site and our social media sites!

Edible San Diego |Hungarian Workshop

The Hungarian Workshop will be featured with photos and an interview in Edible San Diego!

It all started around June when I decided to put a small add up in the window of People’s Market in Ocean Beach CA. A local grocery store that specializes in organic and healthy products. A few days later I received an email from a writer named Enrique Gili who works for, you guessed it Edible San Diego. We exchanged a few emails talking about the furniture and he mentioned that I would be an ideal candidate for a little interview. I was very excited and thrilled about the idea of having an actually interview in a magazine where I can tell the Hungarian Workshop’s story. Enrique said the article will not be published till late Fall and he will be in touch sometime before that.

Finally in mid September the I got call I was waiting for. Enrique and I met up in a local coffee shop that incidentally carried few of my chairs. I felt like it was the perfect place. It was a great feeling sharing my ups and downs and accomplishment with someone who paid so close attention and had so many questions. After we fished, Enrique asked me to send him a few photos in case the editor wants to include one along with the article. I said no problem I have plenty of photos and also friends who would love to shoot new pictures.

A week went by and I was just setting up a meeting to take a couple pictures when I received a call from Edible San Diego saying that the articles will be a bit bigger and now they are sending me one of their personnel photographers. Next thing I know we are at the shop with lights and cameras shooting hundreds of photos!
