The Bourbon Barrel Chest Set

The Bourbon Barrel Chess Set is made of 100% used and reclaimed barrels. An eco friendly art piece that will be loved and enjoyed by both Whisky Advocates and Chess player alike.

Each chess piece is an original design and is handcrafted to preserve the beauty of the product. Similar curves are used throughout each figure that complement the barrel’s natural shape. A set that is a mix of modern with a touch of the classic accents.

The playing board is a full size barrel head that has been beautifully laser etched which displays the woods brilliant grain pattern while creating a unique contrast between the two tiles. The 1″ thick great American White Oak makes for a heavy duty and solid platform.

Time and again you will see authentic distillery markings on the surface of the chess board and chess pieces that will show off the material’s origin and true history.

The Story –

Its quite simple really. With all the bourbon barrel tops and bottoms we have laying around, I am always thinking new ways to use them. The idea of a chess board come to me a little after my son was born. After I started getting a bit burned out on online poker I started playing online chess because I felt it kept my brain way more stimulated. By no means I am chess master, but slowly getting better. After a long time of product and development I had my first board ready and me immediately caught the eye of our social media followers.

Bourbon Barrel Station Bench – $1695

Our Bourbon Barrel Station Benches are constructed to be a great conversation and show piece. Made from reclaimed used bourbon barrels each bench has its own characteristic and will display varies distillery’s old marking including names, dates and serial numbers.
The staves are used throughout the back and sides which have a slight curve that will provide just the right amount of needed support. The barrel heads are aligned for the seating and armrest for a flat smooth surface. With the less is more design these benches will be perfect functional decor for any restaurant bistro or garden.Dimension:

Designing Whiskey Barrel Furniture –

The key element in making anything out of barrel wood is to learn how to manipulate the material the least amount as possible. You’ll want work with the curvatures to keep that reclaimed look which will show off the woods true history. I find it more fun that way. Also that’s where your real talent will show through.

Another thing to keep in mind is that not one barrel is exactly alike. You can have all the perfect measurement written down but if the stave’s size and curves differ, than whatever your working on won’t workout the way you’d like. The quality of the material is extremely important as well. Often the oak will have high moisture levels that will make the wood softer and unusable for a few weeks. Cleaning the barrel is a more of a preference thing. I alway like it when you get to see most of the patina and markings left in. So when it comes to sanding use a 150 grit. That will take away all dirt and grime but leave most of everything else.

It definitely took me about 2 years working with barrels where I can call myself an expert. I have build well over 500+ pieces in 3 short years and I’m still learning new things here and there. I could talk about barrel furniture and techniques for pages but it really comes down to practice. The true beauty of working with this stuff is that no machine can do what we do. Every piece is hand measured and cut for its final spot and you won’t know the requirement till you come to that step.

Every stave is handpicked, sanded, cut, assembled and polished to ensure superior quality. The staves of the recycled Bourbon barrels have been charred – giving them a great black or dark brown patina. All the barrel staves are curved just the right amount to provide excellent support through out your entire body. They are lightly sanded just enough to take off any dirt and grime without removing any of the natural colors.
