Whiskey Barrels For Sale

Here at the Hungarian Workshop we deal with a great amount of Wine and Whiskey barrels. Occasionally we acquire Rum barrels, Scotch barrels and sometimes even Tequila ones. But definitely the most common type is going to the great all American Bourbon Whiskey Barrels. We typically have about a hundred on hand at all times and I never let it slip below fifty. Our handcrafted furniture is loved by the whole country so just incase any large orders should arise, I like to be prepared. In this business obviously material is the key element. No barrels means no product. These unique casks can be hard to find and will not be in stock all the time. Besides all the stress, I still love my job and wouldn’t change it for anything. However I sure do miss simply waking up and grabbing that weeks wood from the lumber yard down the road.

With all that said periodically we can go through fazes where we have far too much and just need to down size a bit to keep storage rent at an affordable rate. In these cases you are in luck because we can offer anyone a chance at to own a full size Bourbon Whiskey Barrels made by very talented coopers that came from some of America’s most famous distilleries.

Whiskey Barrels For Sale

Here in the rest of this Blog post I will go ahead and discuss some important facts and elements about these barrels. Along with some of my insights on how to take care for them when kept whole.

Barrel Characteristics

The first thing I have to mention is that not all barrels are 100% the same. The color, shape, size and quality will vary slightly. Not as much as Wine Barrels. Those are a whole different story. Lets leave that for another time. The way each barrel was kept will affect how they’ll look later down the road. Distilleries will do the aging indoors, but they may take the old ones out doors for a while before they ship them off. Luckily 90% of my barrels are still wet and solid. Fresh from the aging line. Markings and brand stamps will be visible on most barrels but not all. The rings, hoops, straps or whatever you prefer to call them will be mostly rusted. But with a little wire brushing that can be cleaned very fast. The inside will be fully charred. Not heavily toasted like some wine barrels, but fully singed black. Totally burned which gives the whiskey its great color and flavors.

Upkeep

If you choose to purchase a full size barrel the location where you keep it is important. When kept outdoors as yard decoration you’ll want to hose it down about once a month (depends what climate you live in) to keep the wood swollen that will create the tension for the barrel to be intact. Barrels are not glued, nailed or caulked in anyway. I would also recommend placing it in a shaded area. The sun will do faster and more damage to the wood than anything else. When kept indoors maintenance if minimal. However a proper preparation is a must. I recommend cleaning the barrels out before hand with some water. Remove the rust from the hoops with a wire wheel, then spray a clear coat over them to keep from rusting again. Sanding the wood a bit is also recommended just take off and dirt and grim. Applying an oil finish will definitely bring out the colors of the wood while protecting as well. You can find a product like Teak Oil at almost every hardware or home improvement store. Even if you oil the barrel, keeping it indoors will cause the wood to shrink with out the moisture. It will take a lot longer than outdoors but be prepared for that.

Hello! And welcome to the Hungarian Workshop. We specialize in Wine and Whiskey Barrel Furniture, Home Accessories and Decor. The Design

We reclaimed barrels and chop them up into small section that are rearranged in a mosaic like configuration. Each section is hand picked and placed to fit just right to work with the previous stave. A time taking process but worth the effort for the beautiful tight seamed result. Every piece is completely different so you’ll never will end up with repeated shapes, colors and grain movement. The quester sawn French, American or Hungarian White Oak will show beautiful tiger stripe like features that are absolutely exquisite. The backing is also made from strong hearty oak. The Oak Plywood is 3/4 inches thick that ensures a secure and solid foundation. This durable and stable material keeps all Whiskey and Wine Barrel Wall panel perfectly aligned.

Wine or Whiskey

When ordering the panels you will have the option to choose whether you want the panels to be made from Wine or Whiskey Barrels. Wine Barrels are typically made from French Oak that will mostly be lighter in colors. Golden browns, tans and light grays that are pretty much the natural color of the wood. The galvanized rings leave behind unmistakable barrel markings that resemble what I would describe as a tan line. These lines create a strong mosaic look that gives emphases to the color contrast.

If you are looking for more of a dark and bolder style decor than Whiskey Barrels are for you. They are made from hefty American White Oak that is solid as they come. The color scheme for this material is bit tricky-er to describe because there can be such more of a variation. Whiskey barrels tend to be aged longer and how they were kept for so many years will definitely affect their color patina. Easiest description would be a camouflage pattern that includes, black, dark green, all sorts of browns and the occasional rusty red. The reddish color will be rare and a unique section of the wall. It comes from where the steel rings have rusted over the years and stained the wood.

Panel Sizes

Here is the good news! We make four different size panels. Every panel is 11″ wide and available in 2, 4, 6 and 8 feet. Custom sizes are also available. If you need them at a certain height we can easily accommodate. Special widths (under 11″), no problem. The idea with our Whiskey and Wine Barrel Wall paneling is to basically leave you with minimal work and easy installation.

Installation

In the back of the panels we arranged a straight forward French Cleat system. You will have to run the wall cleats level where the panels are going and drill it into the studs. This is and absolute must. Again, every screw whether it’s wood screw for homes or self tapping screws for commercial metal studs, they all must go into studs. The weight of each panel does vary a bit but the weight is still going to be a lot. Once you have the top and bottom cleat up and attached next all you will have to do is simply hang up all the panels like a picture frame. Fast, easy and clean.

Custom Orders

If our standard panel sizes don’t work for you just shoot us an email and let us know. We can very easily adjust sizes. However the width can not be any more than 11 inches. ( We need to maximize material usage and if we cut them any wider we won’t be able to get three pieces out of a 34″ barrel stave.) When we work with large order we will attach two rows into 22′ wide section which will keep the panels even more rigid and make your install even faster. Custom bordering is also available. We can add a 3″ wide White Oak boarder to any order. It is used to cover up any open ends if paneling not placed directly next any other wall. Please contact us via email to arrange this order.

Stone Brewery Collaboration

In the summer of 2012 we made our first barrel chair for Stone Brewing Co. The barrel I received was old, dirty and falling apart. After quite a few pain staking hours of manual labor cleaning and sanding the barrel wood. I started to notice how amazing this material can really be. After I presented my first chair to the hospitality manager, I immediately received an order for a large batch.

Later that year we started making end tables and ottomans to go with our chairs. Within the next year our furniture started expanding to all Stone Brewing Co locations and tasting rooms. Oceanside, Liberty Station, the two Padre Stadium spots, South Park, Stone Farms etc. Long story short, my company established the whole Stone barrel furniture look and I am very thankful for them for giving me such a great opportunity.

The Stone Brewery Collaboration with the Hungarian Workshop for barrel furniture has been going on strong for the past 3 years and it’s still growing bigger and bigger everyday. Just a few months ago I had a meeting with one of the new hospitality managers and we are currently in the talks of getting a huge batch over seas to their new Berlin location. It will be opening next spring so get ready to see the gargoyle and our furniture popping up in European countries.

Whiskey Barrels

We do occasionally sell full size Whiskey Barrels when we have plenty to spare. However, that usually lasts only about a month or so then our prices sky rocket simply because I am not trying to get rid of any more. Our Whiskey Barrels stock will include brands such as, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses just to name a few. But selling Whiskey Barrels is not what the Hungarian Workshop is about at all. Our main focus is what the barrel’s next life will be – FURNITURE.

You would be surprised how amazing the material these old and used Whiskey Barrels can provide. The oak has been through years of stress and curing which makes for the ideal up-cycling concept. After the whiskey gets poured out the wood start to dry once again getter harder and more dense. The colors and the wood’s patina are beautiful! The dark greens, browns, blacks all mesh together perfectly resulting a strong rugged style look.

I try to stray away from the description of my furniture as “rustic”. I fine with calling the material rustic but no the piece its self. When I think rustic, old, wobbly, broken pieces come to mind. I try to drive my designs towards the “Classy Rustic”. The ideas is to see the furniture first, then upon further inspection notice what its made from. That is why you may notice a minimum amount of fully intact barrels used in any of my pieces.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Arrogant Bastard

After the beer is done aging, it is time for the brew master and crew to fill the bottles that eventually end up in your hands. And if they do, congratulation you have great taste in beer. Bourbon Barrel Aged Arrogant Bastard is one of my favorites as well. It dark, thick and taste great. I actually prefer it not ice cold. To me it’s like a delicious dessert after a dinner. ( Even tho if we every eat at Stone I still like to order something from their dessert menu. Ha!)

But what happens to all those old used up barrels? If you are wonder, take a trip down to any of Stone’s many many locations and you will find out quick. You will notice a line of barrel furniture that has been Stone’s look ever since we partnered up. It started with a few adirondack style barrel chairs and now we have branched out to tables, barstools, rocker, home decor etc. Check out our ONLINE STORE to see all the wonderful creation that are possible from old discarded barrels.

Leather Barrel Chair

It is now time to move indoors with our new First Class Collection. I am sure you must have seen all sorts of barrel furniture before, but I bet these are the first with a full leather upholstery. The seat and back rest come with 2 inch thick furniture grade cushion that we wrap with high end leather. To increase comfort and presentation, all our Leather Barrel Chair stitched to create the tufted look.

There are three types of barrel to choose from and three leather colors. We have Wine Barrel that comes with the Cabernet leather. The Bourbon Barrel with the Bourbon leather.

And Rum barrel that features the Stout. Wine Barrels are generally much lighter in color and have a golden oak accent which pairs great with the burgundy. The Bourbon Barrels usually will seem darker with green, black and brown patina. Sometimes creating a very unique camouflage look which work best with the dark brown leather.

Rum barrels are the rarest ones we find. They may seem similar to Bourbon but I can assure you they are not upon closer inspection. because of the high sugar content, the wood soaks a lot of it in turning the material pretty much pitch black. With the pure black leather these chair resembles what I would call a pirate boat style piece. All black, dark and rustic.
