Welcome to the Hungarian Workshop! If you are looking for handcrafted Wine and Bourbon Barrel Furniture you found the right site. J.D. Set

We use barrels from all over the midwest. Distilleries include Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, Maker’s Mark, etc. Occasionally I get my hands on some Jack Daniel’s barrels that I love to turn into one of kind works of beauty and functional art.

Working with this material has been very fun and has allowed my general interest and hobby to turn into a full time career. Using only reclaimed and curved material has made simply woodworking more of an art form. When I used to make only dressers and tables, I felt more like a machine just cranking out square items. And with all the new technology around like CNCs and laser engravers, the idea of a craftsman or “handmade” seems to be dwindling away. Building with such unique and unpredictable material as barrels gives me a sense of security because a machine will never be useful for what we do.

Furniture Made From Whiskey Barrels

Our Bourbon barrel line includes chairs, ottomans, end tables, pub tables, pub stools and pub chairs. Each and every item is handcrafted with attention to detail. Bourbon barrels are made from quarter sawn American White Oak. Usually about one inches thick and widths range from one and half to five inches. The inside of the barrels go through a heavy toasting that leaves the wood fully charred. This charring is what gives the whiskey its great color and taste. When we clean the staves we pretty much knock off all the charring but leave the smooth black finish behind. The outside of the barrel will have colors range from dark browns, greens, and blacks. And same as the inside, we clean them just enough to keep all the beautiful patine that shows of the material true history.

Bourbon Barrel Pub Stool w/ Memory Swivel & BackrestThe Bourbon Barrel version is the exact shape and size. The main difference is the curve of the staves is a bit less and the colors are more darker. The inside of the wood is charred black like all standard whiskey barrels. Instead of the galvanized steel foot rest like the Wine barrel versions have, the Bourbon has regular steel. It is darker and because the metal was rusty there is a nice reddish hue to the finish.

Whiskey BarrelsIn our Recycle Bin section of our Online Store we carry a wide variety of barrels and barrel parts. The most we have are Bourbon Whiskey Barrels. The full size 53 gallon barrels are made from quarter sawn American White Oak that is highly durable and rot resistant. Makes for perfect garden and home decor as well as a rain barrel. The distillery brands we carry include Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Four Roses, Buffalo Trace etc. We also have about 200 scotch barrel that have the best and strongest aromas I have ever had a chance to work.

If you are buying to be creative and to test your skills at making furniture you will have a great experience. Working with barrel wood is unique and unlike any other challenge. Each staves has curves and beveled edges. Pretty much forget anything you learned in your typical wood shop class. However keep your senses sharp as far as safety. Working with material that isn’t straight and square can cause kick back and blade pinching. Just a heads up. Another important fact is that the barrel wood will still have a good amount of moisture level. Before starting on your project, it is a good idea to break the barrel down and let it dry out fully. Place it where its dry and is fairly high in temperature. (Rafters in the garage works great especially if you can fashion a box fan near to keep the air moving. That will speed up the process for sure.)

Whiskey BarrelsAny who, back to talking about the bourbon whiskey barrel we have. Currently we have over 500 in stock and they are definitely taking up a lot of room. A lot of people email us asking for specific brands but unfortunately we don’t have high end brands like Pappy Van Winkle. Also we can’t guarantee the brands simply because the way we have to store them. Moving 20-30 barrels just so we can sell a couple is very impractical and not worth our time.

Whiskey BarrelsWe also receive a ton of inquiries from small craft breweries, home brewers and others who are looking for barrels to age their creation. I hate to break the bad news but our barrels are no longer in that condition. Because of the quantity of Whiskey Barrels we own, we have to store them outdoors exposed to all the elements. I myself don’t know all the health codes and regulations that goes into aging craft beers or spirits so I can’t be any help in this department. For aging you will want a freshly emptied barrel that hasn’t sat around way too long.

Whiskey BarrelsLong story short, if you want Whiskey Barrels for decoration, we have the right ones for you. We can ship singles ones or pallets full right to your door. Shipping prices vary and will start to drop when you order in larger quantities. A single shipment will cost more than the barrel its self but that’s because its size and weight. Sometimes when still very moist a barrel can weight 125lbs. On our site there is a shipping calculator which will help you see the prices first.

We just received 200 fresh full size 53 gallon Scotch Barrel that have the most intense scotch aroma I have ever had a chance to work with. Next week we will be receiving around 200 more and we need to start selling some to make room. Last month I personally broke down almost 200 bourbon barrel to have a huge selection of ready to use staves for our popular furniture line. I must say it’s definitely nice to just pick and go opposed to break down barrels just for specific jobs. The key for this concept can only work with bourbon barrels. That is because all type of whiskey barrels are 90% percent the same. Coopers tend to use the same measurements and dimension for them. Making the furniture process much simpler since we don’t have to bundle them up or keep broken down barrels grouped together.

Wine barrels are a whole different story. We usually don’t have that much on hand so to keep things easy I prefer to leave them whole. When it comes to wine barrel sizes, color, widths and height, they all tend to differ. Most are made from French Oak and many cooperages make them different for the various types of wine. When you make furniture from them it is ideal to use one barrel per piece to keep  a nice uniform design.

The Scotch barrel are pretty much the same as the bourbon ones. However they tend to darken up a whole lot more on the outside. Almost a solid dark green color scheme. The inside is charred just like the bourbon ones. The smell of these barrels are often way stronger. If you love a nice smokey, oaky heavy aroma these are the way to go.

Our popular furniture is loved by many world wide. We usually will have a couple hundred barrels on hand at all times, but sometimes we get a huge overstock. That is when we must put the barrels for sale up and drop the prices. The average price for a full size 53 gallon Bourbon barrel is anywhere from $120 – $165 and Scotch barrels $180 – $220. The Hungarian Workshop has been San Diego’s number one place to order fine quality Wine barrel furniture. In past four years we have teamed up with Stone Brewing Company and haven’t slowed down since. Another big client of ours has been couple of the local Whole Foods Markets and few smaller local brewery’s tasting rooms.

In past year I have been doing a lot of product and development and we have entered a whole new demographic of strictly interior design. The concept of adding fine leather to our current pieces become evident after our products were needed in more and more interior location. By end of the summer we will have the whole new leather line available online and most likely in a couple retail store.

The Chair –

We handcraft each chair from a single wine barrel that is the perfect shape and size for a rocker. Many people often think you can use just about any barrel, but in fact it is important to use a short and round one. Likely a Cabernet barrel will fit that description. They have a much bigger curve radius and wider staves that work very well. All major joints have support brackets underneath for additional reinforcement which we make our self from the Wine Barrel’s rings. All the other hardware is stainless steel for great quality and a high end look. For the finish we use Brazilian Rosewood which protects the oak while bringing out the beautiful grain pattern and patina.

The backrest and seat feature the fine Italian leather upholstered by hand in a tufted style.

Italian Full-Grain Leather 

FULL-GRAIN has been a favorite for a long time that has a very natural look and feel with a generous color palette. Unlike top-grain leather, the surface is left naked. It is aniline-drum dyed and softer to the touch. For anyone who is a true leather purists and those who appreciate the beautiful patina that is enhanced with age.

Bourbon Barrel Bar Stools w/ Italian Leather The Bourbon Barrel Bar Stools are built from reclaimed Bourbon barrels that were used to age that great spirit for many many years. The wood is American quarter sawn white Oak which is highly resistant to the elements and makes for an excellent material. The hoops from the barrels are steel bands that we also re-used that work as the footrest while adding structural stability and strength. The seat is upholstered with beautiful full grain leather made in Italy. The Bourbon Barrel Bar Stools feature a 180 degree memory swivel which repositions the seat when not in use. This piece can be an excellent addition to any home.

Barrel Chairs with LeatherThe Barrel Chairs with Leather design is one of my most proudest creations and it has definitely been very well received. By adding leather upholstery to our barrel furniture line, it has opened up the door to a whole new demographic.


We carry a great variety of barrel furniture that will soon be available in the upholstered interior versions.


The concept came to when I wanted to start seeing my chairs in more of a classy lounge style places and hotel lobbies. Whiskey bars or distillery tasting rooms seemed like the perfect locations too. Many home wine cellars, bourbon rooms and “man caves” would fit the bill as well. This years business goal is to finish our new leather line completely and land a mass distributor who can help make our pieces available worldwide. We already have quite a few items over seas like Germany, Ireland and Dubai just to name a few. But I would like to see those numbers grow.

With a little redesigning and engineering I turned our most popular seller into a sleek, comfortable one of a kind lounge chair. The same great style but with a new elegant and high end look. With the right modifications we were able to keep all the dimensions and profile the same. Both the seat and backrest feature a fully padded and tufted leather cushions. As always, this products can also be made from Wine and Bourbon barrels. Leather colors are also available in multiple different options and more coming soon. The main five colors are going to be a tan, dark brown, black, red and gold. Once we get all the other option figured out we will be happy to accommodate for custom orders.


Bourbon Barrel Chair in GermanyOur biggest client and favorite brewery, Stone Brewing Company in sunny San Diego has quite a few in their restaurant lobbies, tasting rooms and lounge areas. We will be working with a couple other retailers like the Wine Enthusiast so get ready to see more of our new leather lines popping up all around.


The new leather additions will include benches, ottomans, swivel barstools and bar chairs. There will also be a couple special edition pieces which will be made from specific distillery brands.
